I bought the set of three to be prepared to teach middle school math in Seattle Schools as a substitute. First, you can buy used copies for the shipping cost plus a buck, so tons of them have been dumped by unhappy districts already. Second, these are truly unreadable hardcover versions of the comic books they pass out to the students. Neither parents, nor students, can make sense of the convoluted story problems. Third, the books sit in classrooms about the city, not being used at all. Teachers copy worksheets from the Internet and ignore this approved textbooks. Good show curriculum specialists. Absolutely By hhaines This program is not perfect but no math program is, and just because there are no examples to follow does not make it bad. The point of CMP is to get kids to think about math not just practice 25 of the same problem over and over. Research shows us that does not make kids better at taking standardized tests and it does not make them better at using math later in life. By AJ's Mom I am a middle school math teacher in an urban setting. I use the CMP2 program in my classroom. The learning activities help students to discover mathematical principles so that they actually understand math instead of just learning formulas or memorizing procedures. I use CMP2 with my own children at home. There is plenty of problem solving embedded in the curriculum. Students are forced to think and thereby, learn. I strongly recommend using the manipulatives as suggested. Doing math is a lot more meaningful than just computations using pencils and paper.
