Volume ten in the Campaigns and Commanders series, The Black Hawk War of 1812 covers the war from rumors preceding its inception to the major battles of the storm, and calm that settled after it. By J. Lindner In his book The Black Hawk War of 1832, author Patrick Jung provides keen insight into a conflict little known outside of the Upper Midwest where the fighting occurred. His book traces the background of Indian conflicts in general then focuses on the struggle between a band of the Sauk and Fox tribes known as the British Band. Their leader was Black Hawk and somehow history has named the conflict for him. Black Hawk was neither a natural cheif nor a military strategist but he responded when the war thrust those responsibilities upon him. Black Hawk had support among certain members of his own tribe and other local tribes, but he had his native opponents as well. To read this book you almost need a score card to keep straight who sympathized with Black Hawk and who opposed him. His task was daunting and he had very little chance of success, but for a couple of months in the late spring and early summer of 1832, Black Hawk had put the frontier on edge as his forces held off the local Illinois militia. But given the vastness of the American ability to make war, and the tribes that were alligned against him, his British Band was doomed to a fate shared by countless other tribes before and after him. His people held land that the Americans wanted, and there was little Black Hawk could do to stop the ultimate takeover of his lands. Given the nature of the fight and the little chance of success Black Hawk had, the author could have moralized on ethnic cleansing or wrote about the greatness of the federal government. Had he chose these paths, this book would not have been worth reading. But Jung is too good a historian so he focused on the day to day efforts of the war's participants and the limitations they were faced with. Black Hawk was fighting a delaying action as he hoped crossing the Mississippi River would end the hostiities. Henry Atkinson was fighting against time as he was threatened with losing his command to General Winfield Scott. Henry Dodge was struggling to keep his force intact as he conducted his operations. Minor players like Abraham Lincoln was faced with trying to find his way in the world and chose the life of a soldier in the face of unemployment back home. Chief Keokuk was a master manipulator who opted not to fight, but rather sided with the American government in hopes of exploiting the riches of the annual annuity payments. Jung weaves these accounts throughout his book yet can synthisize a greater picture of native conflicts against the backdrop of white expansion. Once the war was over, Black Hawk achieved a celebrity status among the residents of the eastern US cities he visited, often upstaging President Andrew Jackson as the two coincidentally toured simultaneously. Black Hawk eventually wrote an autobiography (which is still in print) where he used his status to serve as a quasi prophet for future US-Indian relations. Jung is able to relate these events with skill and precision. Jung utilized many sources for his work and has the ability to sift through rumors and false claims along with facts and come up with a highly entertaining book that is easily read while at the same time challenges the reader to drawn individual conclusions as to the moral of the story. While the Black Hawk War is not likely to become familiar to all levels of American society, those who read this book will find it enlightening and informative. Jung is a fine historian who can detail military tactics and strategy from both sides of the conflict while demonstrating a respectful sympathy with the vanquished whose lives were changed forever by this conflict. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This is a very well-written book on an important topic: the conflict between the United States and "The British Band" led by Sauk warrior Black Hawk, a war which was forever associated with its Native American leader and which basically put an end to the Native American wars of the upper Midwest. Jung completely avoids the pitfalls that sometimes plague the tomes of university presses: rarified but basicallly unintelligible prose. Although the book is filled with many details -every operation, every movement, and every player whether major or minor -- Jung's writing is intelligent and straightforward. I've read up on the watershed Black Hawk war but this book paints such a clear picture of the event, its players, and its ramifications, that in my opinion, it is the best.
