His pure, almost abstract landscapes and romantic nocturnes suggest that white settlers could live in harmony with nature instead of imposing their will on it. The energy and dynamism of his darkly encrusted, cantilevered sculptures are undeniable. Remington's awareness that the destruction of Amerindian civilization was a national tragedy is reflected in his little-known, melodramatic novels and short stories, as one of the essays here makes clear. With 180 plates (half in color), this album highlights his diverse artistic outlets, from photography to drawing. Goldweber Great book, with gorgeous reproductions and almost all the images you could want. You'll get a great sense of Remington's compositions, colors, and achievement of depth. The essays are written with a straightforward academic style, not terribly fun to read, but very informative. By 5/0 “Frederic Remington: The Masterworks” Shapiro and Hassrick This is a grand volume about the consummate American painter: Frederick Remington. It is a well-written biography combining the contributions of some of the foremost Art names in America. It is scholarly (in a friendly way), thorough, poignant, insightful and candid. The reproductions of Remington's work are many and well-done and the selection is first-class. I could go on and on because Remington was such a vibrant personality and his career such a boisterous, vivid walk through Life.
