Review "Adam D. Frank notes that many people, Chinese and non-Chinese alike, look to martial arts masters to fulfill their fantasies of finding some font of wisdom, or source of power, and/or an Oriental essence. Drawing on his considerable experience as both practitioner and observer of taijiquan,Frank examines the paradoxes and ironies that proliferate when an ancient tradition enters the international media scene. He shows, with modesty and wit, that the form provides insight into Chinese conceptions of the self, the body, and social relations - all of which are put into question in contemporary China's rapid and at times uncomfortable transformation." - Ward Keeler, Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin "Both product and producer of modern identity for people around the globe, the martial art of taijiquan is shown in Adam D. Frank's compelling ethnography to be a highly contemporary urban practice that can teach us a great deal about how culture travels in these postmodern times." - John Nelson, Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, Director, Asian Studies Degree Program, University of San Francisco "Adam D.Frank's evocative ethnography is more than a story of apprenticeship to masters of tai chi in Shanghai, China. Following the path and the myth of the 'little old Chinese man,' both in embodied practice and in mediated representations, Frank tracks the circuitous and often surprising turns of cultural imaginations in both the East and the West. Indeed, analyzing the practice that most epitomizes the Chinese spirit for the West, Frank elucidates the deep transformations that take place when traditional forms are inhabited by and, in turn, transform the global imagination. His writing is highly crafted, his analysis astute, and his subject matter riveting.

This is a book that will set standards." - Deborah Kapchan, Associate Professor of Performance Studies, New York University

Taiji stories, contemporary style By Jean If you've been involved in taijiquan for any length of time, you've heard the stories: about the bird in the hand, or about the founding of the art, or about its theft. This is a storybook for the modern day. The academic bits in this book seem either commonsense or incomprehensible (I'm sure the author won't be surprised to hear this). But whether from his anthropological training, his background in drama, or just his inborn talent, Adam Frank is a great storyteller. He presents multiple perspectives on the art--including his own--with neither scepticism nor belief, but with a relaxed and tolerant curiosity. We get to find out what it's like eat bitter in solitary, intensive practice, to study with a master on the streets of Shanghai, and to negotiate being a white student of a Chinese art; about the politics within a taijiquan family organization, the shape of taiji tourism, Chinese nationalist reformulations of the art, and the way martial arts films have formed our imaginations. This book should be on the shelf of every serious player. I hope the publisher puts it into paperback soon! 10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. WAY overpriced! By shanghaichad I borrowed this from the library last year. As someone who has practiced taiji for many years and visited the incredible city of Shanghai many times, I found it quite interesting, and worth buying. But at $74.95 I have to subtract a few stars and say that anyone who would pay that much for this book would have to be crazy... in Shanghai they say "Tai gui!", and wait for a better price. PLEASE, do not buy this book until the price come down to the $10-15 range... that's all it's worth. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. unique book By Daniel J Pescatore

I borrowed this book from a friend a few years back, read it and found it a very enjoyable, clearly written, and nuanced look on the culture of park martial arts, particularly Tai Chi, in the People's Republic of China See all 3 customer reviews...
