By Roger D. Launius Bedford/St. Martins has been diligent in the last few years in publishing these short histories with documents as an introduction to the subject for classroom use. This book on the history of environmentalism in the United States is sweeping in scope but not particularly broad in perspective. Perhaps that is an impossible task, considering the nature of the subject, but I would have expected that the author would have pursued more aspects of the theme than shown here. For example, Steven Stoll, on faculty at Yale University, explores the dichotomy of industrialism/wilderness romanticism, issues of abundance/scarcity, ecology in society, green politics, and local virtuosity. There is little about global warming, although there is one document from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. There is little about regulation, nuclear waste, industrial development, the EPA, the debates over balancing development and conservation in National Parks, the Earth from space, and the like. At sum this is a moderately useful overview that might find applicability in classrooms but I would prefer to compile my own set of readings that would better reflect my own emphasis in a class on this subject. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
