The definition of "person" implies that no two people, even identical twins, are the same. Although this is obvious (and no sensible person would quarrel with such a view), yet many terms are used that imply that there is a sameness between two or more people. For instance, it is often said that one individual is identified with another which, in ordinary language, means that he or she makes him or herself the same as the other, yet this is an impossibility. So, what is a person? How is a person different from someone who is not a person? This book sets out to answer these questions. I try to formulate a "psychology of the person" which I don't think has been done before. Essential psychological reading By Daniel Anderson Neville Symington is one of the most important authors who can be read in the depth psychological tradition in my view. His thesis in this book is that becoming a person is the human greatest achievement. Becoming a person at once joins oneself with others, creates a sense of meaning, and joins one in the universal ground of Being. Symington maintains that realizing personhood-that simple but demanding act--has metaphysical significance. This book then is both grounded and profound. Symington writes simply and clearly, using many clinical examples. But this is not an easy book. It demands concentration and attention but yields rich rewards. I see it as a companion piece to his A Pattern of Madness (2002), which explores that which stands in the way of becoming human: narcissism. The two books ideally should be read together, but need not be. They are stand-alone works. I recommend them both for their uncommon insight and humanity that animates them.

Life Changing By Richard Frank I have practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy for more than 30 years and I haven't read a book in the last 20 that affected me as a person and a therapist as much as this one. I have always had an aversion to philosophy, but Symington draws on the work of philosophers and thinkers of many backgrounds and uses it in ways that are useful and coherent. It's not an easy read but well worth the effort. I've had the good fortune to have a second analysis with an analyst who applies Symingon's understanding. That experience has changed not only my work as a therapist but my ways of experiencing and living my life. I couldn't possibly do justice to Symington in this space. He formulates mental "illness" as the non-development of the "person" and the task of the therapist as joining his personhood with the incipient personhood of the patient to foster a creative process that goes beyond healing. These words sound dry, but in practice it is a profoundly moving. Try slowing down to absorb a few pages at a time. MCLEAN This is a book of great insight, about a very important topic. There are so many ways, in this age, that we lose sight of the person.
