Mary Martin was one of the greatest stars of her day. Growing up in Texas, she was married early to Benjamin Hagman and gave birth to her first child, Larry Hagman. She was divorced even more quickly. Martin left little Larry with her parents and took off for Hollywood. She didn't make a dent in the movie industry and was lured to New York where she found herself auditioning for Cole Porter and his new show "Leave It to Me!". After she sang the bawdy "My Heart Belongs to Daddy", she ended up on the cover of Life magazine. Six years later, she became the Toast of Broadway when she starred in "South Pacific". After that, she flew as "Peter Pan", yodeled in "The Sound of Music", took "Hello, Dolly!" on the road and shared a four-poster with Robert Preston in "I Do! I Do!". Her personal life was just as interesting: In NYC, she met and married Richard Halliday, a closeted upper-class homosexual who adored her, Broadway and interior decorating (though probably not in that order). They were a powerful twosome. There were rumors about Martin, too, being in a lesbian relationship with both Janet Gaynor and Jean Arthur. MARY, MARY: QUITE CONTROLLED, CHARMING AND MAGICAL: By DEWEY M. I fell in love with Mary Martin listening to the Broadway Cast Album of "South Pacific". Millions more had fallen in love with her as "Peter Pan." I had read her autobiography "My Heart Belongs" but didn't remember much of it. I wondered what lay behind her gregarious "Little Mary Sunshine" stage persona(s). As it turns out, quite a lot. Author David Kaufman loves and admires Mary's talents, but he presents a clear, multi-layered and even handed portrait. This is a story that Mary herself would never dare to tell, and in her overly sunny account, "My Heart Belongs". she definitely did not. Mary was naturally musical and a natural mimic. From the beginning, she was adored and indulged by her parents; and practically everyone else in Weatherford, Texas. This, of course, led to Mary's obsessive need to be adored by everyone on a larger scale; eventually on the Broadway stage. Mary always wanted to be an entertainer. She was clearly unfit to be anything else. Seventeen year old Mary had to get married to Ben Hagman because she became pregnant (with son Larry). Mary's dad quickly dissolved the un-wanted marriage, and Mary's mother Juanita raised Larry until he was twelve. Nothing was allowed to get in the way of her career aspirations. Mary started a dance school, accidentally won a singing contest, and eventually ended up on Broadway singing Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" . Legend has it that Mary was so prudish, naive and inexperienced, she did not understand the sexual nature of Porter's bawdy lyrics. Later in life, she told her grand-daughter she never understood them!
Four years in Hollywood proved fruitless and left Mary badly insecure. But much of Kaufman's biography is devoted to Mary's strange, complex, and co-dependent relationship with second husband Richard Halliday. Halliday was an "obviously (closeted) gay man." I think Halliday wanted to BE Mary! Halliday took care of everything, controlled Mary's career, and controlled Mary herself. And Mary seems to have liked and wanted things this way. Having to hide so much of himself, Halliday became an alcoholic, drug addict, and control freak. Halliday's frequent hissy-fits and control freak behaviors damaged Mary's professional relationships with Noel Coward, Richard Rodgers, and others on occasion, but thankfully, not permanently. And Mary was hiding an important aspect of herself too, although her lesbian inclinations were well known in Broadway circles. Kaufman never confirms or denies her lesbian status. Halliday, the gay guy, and Mary,the alleged lesbian, formed a lasting bond based on her career, and the life and personas they created to protect themselves and each other. Mary and Halliday had a daughter named Heller. Mary often had Heller perform with her on stage. Ironically, after a disappointing experience in "The Skin Of Our Teeth", Heller decided to leave the stage for a normal life, while Mary's more often than not estranged son Larry Hagman became a successful actor. Hagman despised his step-father Halliday for very good reasons, which, nevertheless, left his relationship with Mary fractured and damaged. Mary ascended to Broadway stardom during The Golden Era, and Kaufman gives juicy backstage stories about her huge hits "One Touch Of Venus", "Annie Get Your Gun" (Mary "got her gun" on the road tour, after Ethel Merman opened the Broadway production), "South Pacific", "Peter Pan" and "The Sound Of Music." Not all of Mary's theatre evenings were enchanted, however, and in his even-handed account, Kaufman devotes an equal amount of time to flops like "Lute Song", "Pacific 1860", "Kind Sir" and the disastrous "Jeanine" and "Legends." It seems Mary turned into a diva only once in her long career, during an international tour that took "Hello, Dolly!" to, of all places, Vietnam in 1965. Spending so much of her life in the theatre, I wondered if Mary hadn't sacrificed too much; especially in regard to son Larry Hagman. After Halliday's death in 1973, Mary was adrift and lonely, but she finally managed to form a close and loving relationship with Larry Hagman. Mary made the most of her golden years, and proved to be quite indomitable. She survived a terrible taxi cab accident in 1982 that killed her dear friend Ben Washer and destroyed Janet Gaynor's already fragile health. Gaynor's husband Paul Gregory blamed Mary for the tragic accident, and remained her enemy forever. But, on a happier note, and true to form, "Ageless Mary" flew one last time as Peter Pan at a benefit at age seventy one. Mary wanted to entertain people and be adored by them. As "Some Enchanted Evenings" makes clear, despite any sacrifices, mistakes, and tragedy along the way, optimistic, magical Mary got everything she wanted out of life. See all 35 customer reviews...
