Good but I can't recommend it By Joleen I so wanted to like this, especially after investing in the audiobook. Sorry I wasted the money. This would have made a great melodrama on an old west stage platform, but as an adult book, not so much. The writing seemed more geared toward teen or preteen. Hannah's father bought a house that had been seized by the state when the owners went off to fight in the civil war on the opposite side as the state of Texas. The state considered the property forfeit. In comes the villain with the black hat and black mustache (Herbert). Asking for her hand in marriage (he only wants her land) as he leads her to believe her father left her stranded on the ranch to go back east to tend to her Grandmother, you can just hear the piano playing the bad guy/suspense music, and the audience hissing and calling out, "Boo!!" In comes the handsome hero, William, the son of the previous owner, who just happens to speak both Spanish and Comanche and has a sympathy-eliciting war wound. And the crowd calls out, "Yay!" Of course you can see where this leads... and you'd be right. Amateurish, predictable and one I will not recommend to a seasoned reader. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice Story By Twin Willows Farm Hannah Dandridge has always been the dutiful daughter, raising her young half-siblings as her own when their mother died. Leaving her beau behind when her father moved them all from Mississippi to Texas. Doing what was expected of her.
But now her father is missing, perhaps even killed, and she’s got to make some decisions on her own. While it would be easy to follow the advice of others, including her father’s law partner who wants to marry her, Hannah is more than ready to stand on her own two feet. William Barnett was dragged into a war he didn’t believe in. Still recovering from a wound to his leg, he returns to his family’s ranch only to find it overtaken by another family. Texas has seceded from the Union and anyone who wore the blue uniforms wasn’t wanted there. But William plans to stay and fight for what is his. Which may include the spunky Hannah Dandridge living on his ranch. Nice story that hits some sensitive points about those who fought for what they believed in, and those who didn’t. Good book By Amazon Customer A different view of the War Between the States era. Most books focus on the eastern states, or even Montana and Oregon, but this is a look at how it impacted Texas and the people who settled outside of the Dallas area. Characters were developed well and smooth transitions from one aspect of the story to another.
