A 'DICTIONARY" OF TOPICS RELATED TO SEX/GENDER DIFFERENCES By Steven H Propp Carol Ann Rinzler is a medical writer who has written other books such as Nutrition For Dummies, The New Complete Book of Food: A Nutritional, Medical, and Culinary Guide, Heartburn and Reflux For Dummies, etc. Under "anorexia nervosa," she wrote, "Most people with anorexia nervosa are women. In one recent study in Rochester, Minnesota, the incidence of anorexia nervosa per 100,000 people was estimated at about 270 females and 22 males. Overall, the incidence of anorexia among American women may run from one in every 100 to one in every 250." (Pg. 9) Under "eating disorders," she says, "Eating disorders are virtually unknown in areas of the world where food is scarce. However, in the United States and Europe, where food is abundant, eating disorders affect a small but significant minority of the population, primarily adolescent girls. Among the general population, eating disorders are as much as ten times as common among women as among men." (Pg. 47) Under "body composition," she states, "Pound for pound, women have more body FAT; men, more MUSCLE. A woman's body is 20 percent to 25 percent stored fat; up to 35 percent of its weight is muscle tissue. A man's body is 15 percent to 20 percent fat; up to 42 percent of its weight is muscle." (Pg. 21) Later, under "obesity," she says, "Because woman's BODY COMPOSITION tends naturally toward a higher proportion of fat and a lower proportion of muscle, while a man's is exactly the opposite, it is not surprising to find more overweight women than overweight men at every age, and in every racial and ethnic group." (Pg. 101) Under "osteoporosis," she said, "The female hormone estrogen protects bone density. Both men and women secrete estrogen, but women secrete more of it, and when their ovaries cease producing estrogen at menopause, their body levels of the hormone decline more precipitously. This faster, more sudden and dramatic decline may account for the equally sudden and dramatic loss of bone density that makes osteoporosis so much more common among women." (Pg. 104) Under "spatial reasoning," she asserts, "Men almost always score higher than women on tests designed to measure spatial reasoning. Men are better able to visualize what an object will look like if it is rotated in space---a skill useful in mathematics, engineering, and architecture, professions still dominated by men. This male superiority is so universal that it even crosses species lines. For example, male laboratory rats almost always perform better than female rats at running mazes." (Pg. 131) Her footnotes and citations are contained at the back of the book, which can be a bit awkward to reference.
