Review "A fresh and immensely satisfying new look at a man who paid the steep price of career and honor in defense of his Christian conscience, honed by a long and intimate contact with American Indians. This book highlights once again the contradictory motives that drove the Spanish conquest of the Americas in the 16th century by focusing on one man, Cabeza de Vaca. In his being and in his actions we see and can appreciate the magnitude, the magnificence, and the depravity of an era, borne along by sometimes wildly contradictory obsessions, from the most sacred to the most profane."—Lawrence A. Clayton, The University of Alabama "A broad-ranging look at an exceptional conqueror. Howard covers both the North and South American phases of his remarkable life."—John F. Schwaller, Director, Academy of American Franciscan History From the Back Cover The current image of the Spanish conquest of America and of the conquistadores who carried it out is one of destruction and oppression. One conquistador does not fit that image. A life-changing adventure led Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca to seek a different kind of conquest, one that would be just and humane, true to Spanish religion and law yet safeguarding liberty and justice for the Indians of the New World. His use of the skills learned from his experiences with the Indians of North America, however, did not always help him in understanding and managing the Indians of South America, and too many of the Spanish settlers in the Rio de la Plata Province found that his policies threatened their own interests and relations with the Indians. Eventually many of those Spaniards joined a conspiracy that removed him from power and returned him to Spain in chains. About the Author David A. Howard is Professor of History at Houghton College, Houghton, New York.

The current image of the Spanish conquest of America and of the conquistadores who carried it out is one of destruction and oppression. One conquistador does not fit that image, however. A lifechanging adventure led Cabeza de Vaca to seek a different kind of conquest, one that would be just and humane, true to Spanish religion and law, but one that safeguarded liberty and justice for the Indians of the New World. His use of the skills learned from his experiences with the Indians of North America did not always help him in understanding and managing the Indians of South America, and too many of the Spanish settlers in the Rio de la Plata Province found that his policies threatened their own interests and relations with the Indians. Eventually many of those Spaniards joined a conspiracy that removed him from power and returned him to Spain in chains. That Cabeza de Vaca was overthrown is not surprising. His ideas and policies opposed the selfinterest of most of the first Spaniards who had come to America. What is amazing is that he was able to inspire and hold support among many others in America, who remained loyal to him during his time in prison and after his return to Spain.

I had to read this book for my Latin American History course that I took with Dr. David A. Howard himself. I was a little nervous at first, because I knew I would have to write a book review on it for class, and I didn't want to have to write that I didn't like it. I loved the book! It is an excellent read both academically and for personal enjoyment. I will definitely keep it in my library to go back and enjoy in the future. 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Book! By A Customer David A. Howard has written an excellent book for both academic purposes and casual reading. This insightful and provocative look at the life and times of Cabeza De Vaca should supplement any course that strives to thoroughly explore Latin American history. I highly recommend this text for not only people who are searching for historical truths but also for those interested in reading a genuinely captivating chronicle. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The further adventures of Cabeza de Vaca By krebsman The story of Cabeza de Vaca's long years of wandering in the early 16th Century North American wilderness is one of the most dramatic and inspirational episodes in American history. But what happened to Cabeza de Vaca afterward? That story has largely remained untold, at least in English. So I was excited to find David Howard's CONQUISTADOR IN CHAINS, which has the subtitle "Cabeza de Vaca and the Indians of the Americas." Cabeza de Vaca went back to the New World, this time as titular governor of the province of Rio de La Plata (now Paraguay) in South America. He went there to implement a new system of governing the native population based on kindness and Christian love. He vowed to stop the killing, torture, and enslavement of the local

Indians. He would take measures to stop the Spaniards from making sex slaves of Indian women, and force them to trade fairly with the Indians. His arrival in the colony was met from the beginning by fierce opposition from the current colonists, who were quite happy as tyrants and overlords and did not intend to give up their special privileges without a fight. Cabeza de Vaca was overthrown. His supporters were killed or intimidated while he was not only imprisoned, but chained inside his prison. He never knew when he might be killed. After many months, he was returned to Spain to be tried. Most of the evidence in his defense had been destroyed. The far more numerous accusations against him were mostly false, or else were reinterpretations of facts. Cabeza de Vaca lost his case, never recovered the great expense he had outlaid (leaving him impoverished), and was virtually exiled to an obscure post in Africa. By itself, the book would probably not be very interesting, but knowing Cabeza de Vaca's previous life makes it all very provocative. I am grateful to Howard for making this story accessible to English language readers. Four stars. See all 4 customer reviews...
