Urgent, devastating, essential reading By Dr. Mommy Absolutely essential reading for anyone who cares about social justice and racial equality in the United States. In this book Michelle Alexander clearly describes how it has come to pass that despite "colorblind" laws, we have developed a society where there is what amounts to a racialized undercaste of black and brown people, labeled as "felons" through the War on Drugs and as such subject to completely legal discrimination in housing, employment, federal assistance, and other areas, and often disenfranchised for life. Alexander shows how the war on drugs has resulted in vastly unequal outcomes by race, even though all studies show that whites and people of color use drugs at the same rates. She shows clearly through careful, logical analysis how this system operates, how it has been inoculated against legal challenge at every level (which was shocking and deeply disturbing to me) and how the lifelong effects of being caught in this dragnet never end. This book is urgently needed now more than ever. If there is any hope of healing the poisonous legacy of slavery in this country, it is imperative that this system of oppression be understood clearly, and dismantled permanently, without allowing a new version of racial control to spring up in its place.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Eye-opening book in an age of "colorblindness" By Ipanth The New Jim Crow is an eye-opener indeed. Michelle Alexander's arguments that compares this era of mass incarceration as a result of the so-called War on Drugs in the US to prior eras of slavery and Jim Crow laws are compelling. She makes the case that in this era the stereotyped assumption is that to be "black" is to be "criminal." It seems clear that there is a disparity between the way "whites" are treated in the US criminal justice system and blacks and Latinos are treated. Alexander presents a coherent and cogent argument for why it is so difficult to address this disparity as a racial bias in public discourse and the in the courts in an era in which most of us purport to be and seek to be "colorblind". This book is a must read and convinces me that the War on Drugs and the problem of mass incarceration should be questions brought to the for of public discussion. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An upsetting and shocking book that everyone should read. By Kathi Kellenberger This is a book that everyone should read. It's upsetting and shocking, but if you are like me, you have lived a sheltered life. Sure, I know many people of color in my field of work, but I had no understanding of how the war on drugs mass incarceration were keeping large numbers of people from achieving their full potential, keeping them in real or virtual prisons. This book was written pre-Ferguson. While the book left me feeling somewhat helpless -- that there is no way to fix these problems, things are changing. I doubt that young, unarmed black males are killed by police more frequently than a 3 or 4 years ago, but now we are paying attention. In some cases, the police are being held responsible when they have acted illegally. As a society, we are starting to realize that locking people up doesn't solve our drug problems. The federal government is also phasing out the use of private prisons. Marijuana has been decriminalized, allowed for medical purposes, or even legalized in several states. A new civil rights movement has begun: Black Lives Matter. I have hope for the future. I would love for the author to write a new edition or a follow up because of the events of the past two years.
