Can’t get enough of the medieval world? THE VISCOUNTESS takes you back to the twelfth century and an unforgettable heroine who wages war to gain control of her life. In a time of violence and unrest in Southern France, Ermengarde is a fighter. Married against her will, she sees her substantial inheritance usurped by an unscrupulous husband, her lands given over to a man she can’t stand, let alone love. She rebelled, ran away, and found allies, but this is just the beginning of the battle for her inheritance. Ermengarde’s powerful husband amasses an army and plots to bring her to her knees. Ermengarde’s allies assemble a force, but they are outnumbered. Heady stuff for 1143 and historically accurate. The novel is based on the life of Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne (c.1126-1196). Yet Ermengarde is a woman out of time, as easily imaginable negotiating hostile takeovers in today’s corporate boardrooms as inhabiting her court in twelfth-century feudal France. Like women of today, she struggles to assert herself while maintaining her femininity. She copes with animosity from her allies and unsolicited attentions from one of her knights. When her city is about to be sacked, she sets aside the advice of others to act on her own. Grab a copy today. THE VISCOUNTESS is book two of THE NARBONNE INHERITANCE. Yet it stands alone and can be read without reading book one, THE VISCOUNT’S DAUGHTER.

Page-turning Action and Character-driven Drama By Peg Rooney Hall The Viscountess, the second book in this thriller trilogy, delivers all that is promised by its predecessor, The Viscount’s Daughter. Into an era when women had no rights, no control over

their destiny, no voice . . . enters our heroine Ermengarde. Having escaped in book one, when she was not yet 17 years old, from a brutally evil Count-husband, my expectations for what she could make happen in book two were high. Ermengarde exceeded them. Her story is exquisitely told. I couldn’t put the book down. The drama of war marched through my imagination in bold horrifying pictures . . . battles waged with swords and bludgeons, ramrods and flaming arrows, buckets of scalding water tossed from towers onto approaching knights and screaming horses. The courage and growing skill of the teenage Viscountess pulled me from page to page and thrill to thrill. She defied norms, wearing armor and going to war with her knights. She maneuvered herself into war councils with lords who had much to gain by her victory, but little tolerance for a woman among them. Ermengarde won respect and hearts. With the strength of her bravery, she built a coalition of powerful men. She passed the tests of the battlefield. I cheered, watching her mature as a leader and strategist. Having caught a glimpse of the force Ermengarde may become, I can’t wait for book three. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So graphic the horrors, so brave the young medieval heroine this is a real page turner By Suzi Stembridge The amount of research needed to craft this exceptional book is impressive. It is clear that Phyllis Haislip really got under the skin of her 12th century heroine and precisely explored the historic settings of Toulouse, Narbonne and Carcassonne in south west France so the reader can be transported there, getting to know Ermengarde as a a precious friend. Haislip grapples with her heroine Ermengarde's wearing of mail, the correct underwear, her feelings as a very young woman, the horrors of barbaric medieval war and admits that the historical facts are so contradictory it must be read as fiction, although clearly Ermengarde lived a remarkable life. Just as Joan of Arc transcends the centuries so Ermengarde also fascinates; a determined and intelligent young woman, with only 17 name days behind her. But this is good fiction and the fears felt by Ermengarde hounded through the region by her estranged and evil husband from whom she fled, are experienced by the reader. It is interesting how modern are the situations that Ermengarde experiences, uniquely brought about because this is a woman's life in a man's world, in the 12th century. This is volume 2 of The Narbonne Inheritance but perfectly readable on its own and Haislip cleverly recaps without breaking the thread of the narrative. One anticipates volume 3 as such a perfect heroine surely has much more to give. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
