About the Author Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL. Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America. Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel. Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Precalculus review By Alexander Gonzalez The precalculus book I ordered arrived in excellent condition. It was in very condition as reported in the description of the book. This revision is an excellent alternative to the 5th edition which is much more expensive.
I compared thr two versions and found that revision 5 has been rearranged somewhat and additional chapter tests have been added. I use the book as a tutor supplement and it is excellent for this purpose. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Everything You Need for Pre-Calculus. By THE HAPPY READER This is a wonderfully well written text book on Pre-Calculus. The text is clear on the process of solving various problems as well as giving the right amount of theory to help the student along. I am one of those people who does not do well with sitting and listening to lectures. I'd prefer to get some supplementry books such as the Complete Idiot's and others of that type, then sit down, read those and work through the textbook on my own. With this book, a self-taught student should be able to do without supplementry texts. As for the content itself, the book covers a vast array of techniques and approaches to it's problems. The text is well organized and it has plenty of examples. Also it does well on telling you when (and when not) certain techniques are applicaple. Overall I could not recommnend a book better for a Pre-Calculus text. If you still need some sort of supplementry text go for Micheal Kelly's Complete Idiot's Guide to Pre-Calculus. It is a bit less in the math jargon and brought down into more common language. With these two you'll be on you way to the wonderful world of Calculus soon. You'll notice if you look by the way that the one star and two star reviews seem to be seller reviews and not on the product itself. I've reported these as inappropriate since they do not belong in this section - so hopefully on reading this they will not be there any longer. If you take out these reviews this book would have a near perfect 5 stars. By the way my review refers to the 8th Edition of this text for future purposes. 41 of 42 people found the following review helpful. well designed for self study By Charles R. Williams I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise. My one quibble with the book is the way trigonometry is introduced. It seems to be needlessly convoluted so if you are thinking of adopting it you should read the first two or three sections covering trig. I chose to supplement it with my own notes. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to supplement a high school precalculus course with a book that is stronger on theory vs. graphing calculator techniques. There are some very inadequate precalculus texts out there. If you are serious about mathematics and your school is using an approach that employs graphing calculators in a heavy way, you may want to use this book. In that case consider an older (cheaper) edition. Update: Another reviewer comments that the 7th ed and the 6th ed may be significantly different. Well, they are not. See all 77 customer reviews...
