RELIGIOUS RIVALRIES AND THE STRUGGLE FOR SUCCESS IN CAESAREA MARITIMA (STUDIES IN CHRISTIANITY AND JUDAISM) FROM BRAND: WILFRID LAURIER U PDF

We know how the story of the Roman Empire ended with the "triumph" of Christianity and the eventual Christianization of the Roman Mediterranean. But how would religious life have appeared to an observer at a time when the conversion of the emperor was only a Christian pipe dream? And how would it have appeared in one particular city, rather than in the Roman Empire as a whole? This volume takes a detailed look at the religious dimension of life in one particular Roman city Caesarea Maritima, on the Mediterranean coast of Judea. Caesarea was marked by a complex religious identity from the outset. Over time, other religious groups, including Christianity, Mithraism and Samaritanism, found a home in the city, where they jostled with each other, and with those already present, for position, influence and the means of survival. Written by a team of seasoned scholars and promising newcomers, this book brings a new perspective to the study of religion in antiquity. Along with the deliberate goal to understand religion as an urban phenomenon, Religious Rivalries and the Struggle for Success in Caesarea Maritima studies religious groups as part of the dynamic process of social interaction, spanning a spectrum from coexistence, through competition and rivalry, to open conflict. The cumulative result is a fresh and fascinating look at one of antiquity’s most interesting cities.

Most helpful customer reviews 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Exemplary Collection of Essays with a Sharp and Well Defined Focus By David E. Blair Collections of essays tend to be highly variable with regard to the quality of the individual contributions. Here we are dealing with the product of a long term seminar, and the quality of the essays included ranges from superb to competent and informative with no exceptions. The seminar is entitled, "Religious Rivalries and the Struggle for Success: Jews, Christians, and Other Religious Groups in Local Urban Settings in the First Two Centuries." It is largely a Canadian group of scholars. But, it has been able to call upon noted academics from around the world as needed. Many seem not to have noticed that Canada and Australia have developed their own vibrant scholarly communities working in early Christian origins as well as religious studies in general. These communities to some extent have a unique voice. For the Anglo-phone only reader and student, this provides the opportunity to assess scholarship in these areas from a greater variety of perspectives. The book in general champions the theory of "the religious marketplace" as explicated by John North. Rather than the old paradigm of religious competition as conflict and triumph, North proposes a much more nuanced explanation of these rivalries. In religiously pluralistic urban environments, he sees a variety of responses to inter-religious contact. These range from tolerance and cooperation to outright violent interaction. In between, there is competition for adherents and power followed at the next stage by bickering and disputations. None of these are fixed points but merely locations on a continuum of varied responses. The book presents its material in three sections which are titled "Evidence," followed by "Religion," and lastly "Perspectives." The editor Terence L. Donaldson provides a useful introduction. It not only goes over the seminar's purposes, but also provides a work plan for the book and some necessary methodological information. "Evidence" contains four essays which cover archeology, literary, and epigraphic elements followed by a highly inclusive bibliography of archaeological studies. Ancient Caesarea Maritima lends itself to detailed physical examination. Virtually abandoned after the Arab conquests, it somewhat came back to life during the early crusades. In 1265, it was conquered by the Mamluks who reduced the city walls and fortifications. It has thereafter remained largely abandoned except for some agricultural usage. This usage pattern has left substantial material remains for the period from 20 BCE through the sixth century CE. From the about 1950 to the present, the city has been subject to almost continuous archaeological investigation. The first essay by Peter Richardson details the physical history of the city from its founding as Strato's Tower through the first two Centuries CE with emphasis on the remains of religious sites. During this period, literary and epigraphic evidence is much sparser but covered as well as possible considering our sources in the next two essays. Closing out this section of the book is a remarkable thirty-six page bibliography of specifically archaeological works on Caesarea Maritima and its surroundings. For my studies, this is of little interest, but for others it will provide an extremely valuable source for further investigation.

The second section of the book "Religion" presents four religion specific essays that cover GrecoRoman religions, Jews and Judaism, Christianity, and Samaritanism within the urban setting of Caesarea Maritima. The first two religious groups are well covered. However, during the time period delineated in the seminar's title, "... First Two Centuries," our knowledge of Christianity is somewhat attenuated and for the Samaritans scant at best. These are all fine essays, and the applicable time frames have been expanded so as to provide much interesting material. Much more could be said, but space prohibits. Ultimately, it is the essays in the third section of the book that standout. Focus becomes sharper as the topics become narrower and more well defined. Here we are presented with six superb essays concerning matters that both specialist and generalists will find valuable. Many have opined on the historicity of the events surrounding the Centurion Cornelius as related in the Acts of the Apostles. Wendy Cotter's essay on religion and the Roman Army settles the matter to my satisfaction. She does this by using historically available evidence. In "Architecture and Conflict" by Stephen Fei, the conflict for civic rights in Caesarea Maritima between the Jews and Syians plays out and eventually winds up in front of the Emperor Nero. The Jews lose, the Jews riot, the Jews are massacred, and an immediate cause of the first great Jewish revolt flares out of control. Ruth A. Clement masterfully covers Origen's Hexapla and its meaning within Jewish/Christian debate. The Hexapla and its uses were indicative of substantial Jewish Christian relationships into the early to middle third century. R. Jackson Painter's essay on Mithraism locates this cult with specificity both physically and within the social setting of the City. This is but a meager sampling of this most illuminating material. A short conclusion is provided by the editor, Terence L. Donaldson. This does a nice job of tying the essays together. Strikingly absent considering much current scholarship is any evidence of intra-Christian rivalries. If they were there, they left no traces in the historical record. A subject index is missing which is normal in essay collections. However, an extensive bibliography is included for those seeking further information on the topics covered in the text. This is of course in addition to the archeological bibliography mentioned earlier. While the body copy of the book is heavily footnoted, there is also an index of modern authors and an index of ancient manuscript usage. These will make the book fairly easy to navigate for the attentive reader. With the structure present, there is no pressing need to provide an overarching synthesis as might be expected in a monograph. However, with this book, I find the focus of the whole collection of essays so tight as to make the sum of the parts far greater that the individual contributions. After finishing this book, I was left with the impression that I had read enough about Caesarea Maritima to make a logical synthetic construction of my own. Truly informative and truly brilliant from time to time, I give this book a most enthusiastic recommendation. While accessible to any literate adult, this is highly specialized material. Any reader with a modicum of knowledge of Christian origins will find some gems herein. Even most advance of scholars in this field will be deeply edified by this superb offering. And, the sum total of the study provides a persuasive alternative reading to much current material on the topic of religious rivalries. See all 1 customer reviews...
