I AM HERE : TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF SOUTHWEST INDIAN ART AND CULTURE by Labratory and Anthroplogy Museum of Indian Arts and Culture : Museum of New Mexico "One of the nation's most extensive collections of Pueblo and Athabasca art is housed in the Museum of New Mexico's Laboratory of Anthropology. I am Here brings to light precious objects from those collections, never before popularly viewed, and traces the evolution of four important southwestern material culture traditions: basketry, textiles, ceramics, and adornment. In exploring the growth and development of these traditions, prehistoric past is connected with historic present, and centuries-old patterns of adaptation and survival in the American Southwest are illuminated."

Beautiful History of Indian Arts By Kim Messier The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, which opened in July of 1987 as the display wing of the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, was built to house one of the finest collections of Southwestern Native American art and artifacts in existence. I can attest to the extent of their pottery holdings, for when my co-author and I were researching Hopi & Pueblo Tiles: An Illustrated History we discovered not only some fine old Hopi tiles, but most importantly a cache of significant tiles made at San Ildefonso Pueblo in the early part of the twentieth century painted by Crescencio Martinez and probably made by Tonita Roybal. Back in 1989, to celebrate the opening of the new hall, the Museum of New Mexico Press published a gorgeous volume entitled I Am Here, subtitled “Two Thousand Years of Southwestern Indian Art & Culture,” it served very nicely as an exhibition catalog for MIAC. The body of the book is set out in two sections. The first is comprised of essays on five major art forms and their history written by some of the most authoritative scholars in the field at the time: Andrew Hunter Whiteford on basketry, Stewart Peckham on prehistoric pottery, Rick Dillingham on historic and contemporary pottery, Nancy Fox on jewelry and Kate Peck Kent on textiles. The second half, or “plates,” is a photo gallery - mostly color images - of some of the museum’s most outstanding pieces set out chronologically, “Prehistoric 1000 BC-AD 540,” then “Early Historic 1598-1880”, “Late Historic 1880-1960,” and finally “Contemporary-post 1960.” This shows the evolution in art forms over the centuries. I Am Here is a beautifully published book on what was in the late 1980s a very popular subject. What seemed like a small print run at the time – 4200 copies in paper and 1500 copies in hardcover – now seems generous. Compared to the general print quantity of 3000 copies for American Indian art books of the last ten or twenty years as a result of the shrunken audience for southwest subjects after the fad of “Southwest Style” faded some years ago.
