Fabulous, breathtaking debut By Victoriana This is one of the best HR debuts I've read, and it is riveting from start to finish. There is nonstop action and suspense, but there is so much emotional and romantic development as well. Maizie, the heroine is apprehended by Trent, Earl of Radburn, who is tasked with apprehending a RobinHood-like character, the Midnight Rider, who has been stealing from the rich (and corrupt) and giving to the poor. He knows Maizie has some connection to this highwayman, but what could it be and how much does she know? Trent is my very favorite type of hero. He is honorable and principled and determined. He is serious, stern, and strong. He believes that justice will always be served by the law and by precedent. He believes that he in particular has a duty to uphold the law because of his position as arbitrer of justice. Trent and Maizie have an ideological clash (which is my favorite type of clash in a romance). Maize does not believe the law can always help or be fair to those who are taken advantage of by people with wealth and power. She tries to even the scales herself by giving to the poor and wronged by stealing from the rich who abuse their power. To a man who sees in black and white, Maizie is the ultimate conundrum. How can a woman who is otherwise so kind and compassionate be a criminal? It also doesn't help that as they get to know one another, they begin to appreciate and sympathize with each other. Maizie learns that while Trent might be a little blind where his father and his priveledged peers are concerned, he is a very honorable, principled, and good man, who could do a world of good for his people and his country. Trent meanwhile finds out that while he cannot agree with her disregard for the law, Maizie is a good-hearted, compassionate woman who is moved to do the things she does out of a desire to champion those in need and right their wrongs. Throughout most of the book both characters grow closer, emotionally and physically, while they are still enemies and are at a stalemate. Maizie, as much as she grows to love Trent, cannot betray the Midnight Rider, and Trent, much as he sympathizes with Maizie, cannot relinquish his honor or his duty. This is where the emotional tension and suspense grows intense. I am already salivating for the next book by Ms. LaValle. Hope it comes out soon! 10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Sensational story By dreamweaver25 I learned of this book from Julie Long, so if you are a fan, take her word for it and buy this book! I loved the chemistry between Mazie and Trent, who tried desperately to not fall in love. Great "inner voice" for both of them, full of vulnerability and longing, and a need to do the right thing, which made me fall in love along with them! :-)
Two reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars (pet peeves of mine, you may not be bothered by them) occasionally the language jolted back to 21st verbiage, and there were a ton of typos. I started highlighting the typos after chapter 23 and I found 35! But those minor gripes aside, I adored this richly told story, full of little throw-away details (like she hated wearing her corsets laced too tight) that made all the characters so real it was sad to have the story end, like good friends who are moving far away. Mazie Chetwyn has been taken captive by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. He knows that she has been working for the Midnight Rider and wants information to enable him to be captured. Trent Chathwick, the Earl of Radford and the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, is attracted to Mazie from their introduction and the feeling is mutual. When he finds out that she is really Lady Margaret, he is at a loss as to what to do with her. Lady Margaret goes from captive to "guest" with Trent's sister acting as chaperone, but Mazie still finds ways to thwart Trent's ability to find the Midnight Rider by giving him false clues. Will Trent find out why Mazie will not give up information about the Midnight Rider and what will happen to their mutual attraction when it looks like Mazie might be heading to the gallows? I throughly enjoyed this book. The banter between the H/H had me laughing out loud. I always love when there is a very strong female lead and Mazie did not disappoint. The strength of character in Trent was heartbreaking as he had to reveal things about his family that he didn't want to be true. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
