By David C Lewis A very solid and enjoyable history of the mission and presidio on the San Saba River. Weddle especially covers the forces at work far away from the San Saba River that resulted in the failure of the mission, and on the long term ramifications of that failure. I think he also gives a fair assessment of the two main presidio commandants. If a person wants to delve into it further, the San Saba Papers is a book of similar size that has English translations of many of the Spanish letters of the time that related to the project. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable, but slow in parts... By Matthew Watt The San Saba Mission by Robert S. Weddle is a comprehensive outlook on the Spanish attempt to gain a foothold in Texas through missions and presidios. It focuses on one mission in particular and the massacre that occurred there, along with the repercussions of that massacre on the Spanish foothold in Texas. The books starts out by describing the numerous plans to not only christianize, but also control, the Indians of Texas and the Great Plains. They finally came up with the mission and presidio system,
but rarely did this work in Texas. With the newly discovered horse and firearms, the Indians became fierce fighters, thwarting every Spanish attempt at colonizing Texas. Then the book moves on to the founding of the San Saba mission (not titled that of course, but it is a general name for both the mission and the presidio on the San Saba River). Robert S. Weddle discusses the important people who helped found the mission and presidio (i.e. Parrilla), and talks about the people who manned each. Finally, it mentions the problems with the mission's placement away from the presidio and on the other side of the river, leaving the mission vulnerable. When the mission was surrounded by thousands of Indians, these factors and others discussed by Robert S. Weddle led to the massacre that occurred on March 16, 1758. Finally, the book discusses the repercussions of the San Saba mission massacre and those who took over the mission after the massacre. The Spanish first try an immediate strike on the Indians, which turns out to be successful in the beginning but soon fails. With the Indians too strong and pesky, the Spanish are forced to reevaluate their situation in Texas. The San Saba Mission by Robert S. Weddle is an easy and fun read, though it does get slow in some parts. When you try to follow all of the events and happenings preceding the founding of the San Saba mission, just do your best to keep up because it will be worth the journey the rest of the way. Overall, the book is extremely informative, especially on why the Spanish kept trying to hold a mission and presidio on the San Saba River. Everyone enjoy! See all 2 customer reviews...
