It is a good book, but could have been a great book By Paul Rogers This book is about a draft dodger who was transformed not so much by taking a stand against the war in Indonesia (Vietnam), but about his encounters with real world politics in his travels through third world countries. Most American patriots live under the delusion of “American Exceptionalism”. Ken’s book discovers through dialogue and relationships the economics of Capitalism. How tremendous wealth fuels America’s highest virtue – consumption – and leaves third world poverty and habitat destruction in its wake. The book spends too much time on the author’s sexual exploits which detract from lessons learned as a draft resister, and how the lessons of Vietnam “was not an aberration but the fruition of a policy” that essentially is our relationship with the world. Well written, flows along nicely, and gives great insight into a seminal period in American history while also giving a clear understanding of an engaging and delightfully honest central character, the author as a young man enjoying travel, girls, and life's sometimes odd challenges.
