By Marc Richardson Anyone willing to shell out $60-100 for volume 2 of a collection is probably already aware of what this essentially is, so I won't go over all the details. However, please don't assume the criticisms below take any joy away from my geeky, giddy, happiness at this book. Here's more info for those who are curious. In addition to the main reprints of Uncanny X-Men #132-153, annual #4 (after #138) & 5 (after #150) it peppers in Avengers Annual #10 (after #149) and Marvel Fanfare #1-4 (after Annual #5 and before #151).
FYI, the reprints of Marvel Fanfare do include the Editori-Al pages. After the main portion, there is a supplements section for the following: - Marvel Treasury Edition #26 6 page Wolverine vs. Hercules story. No cover reprint. - Marvel Treasury Edition #27 5 page Angel story. No cover reprint. - Marvel Team-Up #100 10 page Storm & Black Panther story. Unfortunately, whoever was doing the adjustments to the artwork boosted the contrast a bit too much. Subtle shades of gray in some of the graphite shading and ink washes are faded out. By Ian This Omnibus collects Uncanny X-men #132-153, Avengers annual #10 and Marvel FanFare #1-4. It includes the latter half of the Dark Phoenix saga, plus the Days of Future Past storyline: arguably the two greatest X-Men stories ever. This book sees the end of the Chris Claremont/ John Byrne collaboration that made the title what it is today, but we get the return of Dave Cockrum on art. We also get some fantastic Michael Golden artwork on Marvel Fanfare 1-4, and the now-classic Avengers Annual 10 (which happens to be Brian Michael Bendis' favorite comic of all time). Bonus features include original pencil sketches from John Byrne, Byrne's unused cover to X-Men 142 (it was lost in the mail) and Phoenix: The Untold Story. This is a great bonus feature because it includes the original ending to X-Men #137 (not as emotional as the ending they went with, imho) plus a round-table discussion of the story with the creative team and editors of the time. I loved this because it pulls back the curtain on the title to show how a comic story is created. Very insightful. My only complaint is that this title didn't include more issues. By Ian Moodie Whoever came up with the idea of reissuing classic comics in OMNIBUS form is certainly very innovative indeed. These OMNIBUSES surely preserves both the comics and the memories of gathering them individually, they save space,"economical" and are a most majestic way to collect comics, not to mention.."a showcase in any bookcase". I own a few and is most pleased with them. I just want to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation for these magnificent masterpieces. Now...When I heard of THE UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL # 2 been released, I was like "wow, it's about time". Rushed for it and was again most pleased, as usual, another well-made book, high quality paper which shows up the art perfectly, over 900 pages, collects THE UNCANNY X-MEN # 132 to 153, ANNUALS #s 3 and 4, AVENGERS ANNUAL #10, MARVEL FANFARE # 1 TO 4 and not to mention a SUPPLEMENT section with bonus stories and extra art. Crafted by CHRIS CLAREMONT, JOHN BYRNE and DAVE COCKRUM, these stories was, were, are and still IS some of or perhaps MARVEL'S very best !!!. THE "DARK PHOENIX SAGA" is right on par with THE "GALACTUS TRILOGY". Never in my life had I wait so very anxiously, so anticipatingly each month for the next issue !!!. Like classic movies, these tales somehow live with you, you just cannot forget them !!. Though originally issued decades ago, they are as fresh as ever, these are true classics, they have stood the very test of time itself. They set the standard by which all others will be judged... Another iconic tale is in issue # 143, in which KITTY PRIDE is attacked by a most savage demon and triumphed all by her lonesome. It's real awesome to have all these hit stories in one OMNIBUS. "DAYS OF FUTURE PAST" , another well crafted tale with conflicts involving THE BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS , which is now a mega movie is showcased in issues # 141 & # 142 respectively. Other well crafted tales includes ALPHA FLIGHT, THE WENDIGO, DOCTOR DOOM, MAGNETO and let's not forget the mysterious, timid and elusive CALIBAN...I would love to see more of CALIBAN. In MARVEL FANFARE the adventure continues with KAZAR, SPIDER MAN in the SAVAGE LAND against SAURON and a horde of others. Overall this classic set is indeed PARAMOUNT EXCELLENCE REVISITED and REISSUED !!!. TO all fans of THE UNCANNY X-MEN and the "TRUE BELIEVER", a perfect way to introduce
