An Excellent Study Guide By Larry Becoming a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park is one of the more rigorous processes in the professional world. Recently revamped, the certification process requires the successful completion of four tiers: a written examination; a panel interview; a mandatory information and orientation program; and an oral battlefield examination. Passing each of the tiers presents its own challenges, but especially the written exam. According to recent data from the National Park Service, only 14 percent of the test takers passed the exam. The odds are, indeed, long! Rea Andrew Redd makes an invaluable contribution for anyone thinking about taking the written exam, through the second volume of his Gettysburg Campaign Study Guide. Like in the first volume, published in 2012, Redd divides the book into “sections.” These range from “Essential Monuments: July 2;” to “July 3: The Grand Assault.” Should a reader believe the book offering too much minutia, he or she might visit the battlefield guide website. There the content knowledge tested on the exam is listed, including “Identification and location of monuments and landmarks location the battlefield and in the town, and relevant maps” and “Identification and location of topographical and terrain features on the battlefield and in the town, and relevant maps.” Redd brings a range of knowledge to the book. An academic librarian, Redd also teaches college history; maintains “The Civil War Librarian,” a nicely constructed and frequently updated blog; and serves in the Ninth Pennsylvania Reserves reenactment unit. He dedicates the second volume of the study guide to “those who study, teach and engage the American Civil War and enjoy history.” He also, graciously, invites anyone with questions on the written exam, the study guides, or the Civil War in general, to contact him directly.
Readers might hope that Redd is working on a third volume. Such a work might include the sections on the exam not yet covered in the study guides, including a knowledge of “other major American Civil War battles” and an understanding of the “causes and consequences” of the war. A terrific book that inspires learning more about Gettysburg! By Susan Amirian Bonser We have lived in Gettysburg for several years, worked at the park and spent many hours walking the battlefield. We read everything we can find to understand better what happened here. My husband has even expressed the wish to take the LBG exam. This book offers a new way for us to look at the battlefield. Rather than dense narrative, it asks and answers key questions about what went on here, who the people were, and what monuments they placed here for us to remember them and their sacrifices. Clear maps, photos, and a very interesting bibliography inspires further reading. Well done! We did this backwards, but just ordered Volume One. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Nice exam guide By Jerry bent Nice exam guide. Dealt far too much on time oriented questions. Soldiers and commanders differed a great deal on what time things occurred anyway. I guess there may be as many as 50 errors in the book. Majority of those errors deal with grammar and wording of questions but a few deal directly with facts. I enjoyed the book.
