Refined country houses, gracious urban dwellings, posh Broadway cafés, exotic nightclubs, and a high-rise apartment building that, 80 years after its construction, is still considered the epitome of tony living in Manhattan these are among the many achievements of William Lawrence Bottomley, one of the best American architects of the first half of the 20th century. A Fitting Tribute to a Classical Architect By Classicdude In a day where new "luxury houses" too often refers to the awkward "McMansions" which are large assembleges of classically-inspired elements chosen from a catalog and pieced together by a computer, it is inspirational to see the products of a skilled architect who had a true understanding of the building traditions of the past. William Lawrence Bottomley interpreted the classical vocabulary for the architecture of his day, which fortunately is still valid and valued today. This book is filled with examples, mostly houses from the teens, twenties, and thirties, that show a great talent for installing a contemporary floor plan within a classical shell that reflected the architectural traditions and preferences of the locale, largely Virginia but also the estate areas of New Jersey and New York among other areas. Nearly all the houses are easily adaptable to the living standards of today. Subsequently, there is a high percentage of survival and a Bottomley house is highly desirable in today's real estate market. This book is a fitting tribute to the architect, giving some background history of the original owners and showing mostly period photographs in black and white. Some original construction drawings are shown as are some presentation drawings. The redrawn floor plans are less successful in providing information to the serious reader, but better than nothing, since part of his genius was the plan. Although multiple floors are sometimes shown, too often only the first floor plan is indicated; this is the most glaring ommission of the book. The small amount of recent photography can be forgiven. But overall it is a great book and a "must" for all interested in classic residential architecture of the early twentieth century. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Acanthus Press does it again By Thomas A. Brown "The Architecture of William Lawrence Bottomley" is the latest addition to a fine series of books on architecture and design by The Acanthus Press. As with the other books in their series on architects, this volume presents the best of Bottomley's output with indepth discussions of 34 examples of his work, from a church to a city hall as well as his extraordinary residential commissions which inludes townhouses, River House in New York City and a variety of magnificent homes. The book provides a wealth of floorplans, some site plans and period photographs (mostly in black and white) of the various projects. Also included is a fine biography of Bottomley which discusses his family life and his professional career, and a catalog of commissions. This book is a must for anyone interested in Bottomley and/or fine traditional,(mostly) residential architecture. This hard-cover volume, as all volumes in the Acanthus Press catalogue, is beautifully envisioned and produced.
