From School Library Journal Grades 2-8. Frank Baum's classic adventure fantasy receives a fine, straightforward treatment on this well-produced book-on-CD. Narrator Adams Morgan tells of Dorothy's adventures in an understated matter, and his less-is-more approach actually enhances the fantastical events occurring in the novel. Morgan does not overplay the characters, flexing his voice just a tad when speaking as the cowardly Lion, the brain-seeking Scarecrow, and the rusty Tin Man. Yet he keeps the action moving at a brisk pace, and makes the story easy to follow and compelling. Listeners only familiar with the legendary 1939 movie will have fun discovering the material not included in the film. The basic story is the same: a cyclone whisks Dorothy to Oz; her house lands on and kills a Wicked Witch; she hopes the great and wonderful Wizard of Oz will transport her back to Kansas; and she is joined on her journey to Oz by the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. In this complete version, the travelers encounter characters who are helpful (the Queen of the Field Mice, Morgan' giddiest characterization), strangely frightening (the bizarre Hammer-Heads), or surrealistic (the girl made of fine china). The Wicked Witch of the West not only sends flying monkeys to attack the heroes, but also wolves, crows, bees, and cowardly slaves called "Winkies." Some listeners may be surprised by the more violent sections of the story (the Tin Man uses his axe to decapitate foes, the Lion twists off the head of an enormous spider). This presentation may not rival Flo Gibson's classic reading of the story (Recorded Books, 1980), but does bring Baum's enthralling world to life. Brian E. When I did a search for this title I didn't see any publishers I recognized, so I ordered this version. It is a strange copy with almost non-existent margins, long text lines, and a thin cover. When I went back to the "Look Inside" feature, I could then see an edition by Puffin featured down the sidebar. This thin copy was damaged during shipping, so I returned it and got the Puffin edition instead. (Wish I understood Amazon's search algorithms better so I could find good quality products on the first search page...) 51 of 55 people found the following review helpful. A good reference book. By A Customer This is quite a thorough reference book for Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It contains about 70 pages of biographical information about Baum, a history of the Oz series including some color plates, and related discussions; a reproduction of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz printed with correct colors with thorough annotations; a 20 page section about W. W. Denslow's illustrations beyond the collaboration with Baum; and 20 pages of bibliography. Hearn makes a point of saying that the reproduction of the Wizard reproduces the colors correctly; this is probably less of an issue now that high quality facsimile editions are available, unlike say the Dover edition of 1960. There are plenty of annotations, often fairly long, which are interesting but aren't in the category of opening up whole new worlds of perspective on the book. There are also some b&w photos and some other illustrations which hadn't been previously published. The Annotated Wizard is probably most of interest to those with a particular fascination about Oz, and those who are interested in a historical perspective and context for Baum's first Oz book. It would have been nice if it were printed on higher quality paper -- especially the color plates. 28 x 22 cm (landscape), hardcover, 384 pages + 32 unnumbered pages of color plates. New York: Clarkson N. Potter Inc, 1973. LCCN 72-80842. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book, I could look at it for hours! By Shay barker The artwork is amazing in this book! It is the coolest pop up book I have ever seen. It was so fun looking through the book for the first time. Every page was an adventure. I would not recommend this book for small children, unless they are very well supervised, since the pages could rip or get ruined. I did look at the book with some of my nephews, who were enjoying looking at it with me. They loved seeing the pictures and hearing the story (I shortened the story). I went through and read the story myself afterwards. I have seen other pop up books by Robert Sabuda, and I have been very impressed. He is a great artist, and is very creative about how he plans the pop up pages.
