From Publishers Weekly This latest recounting of the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone—the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics—focuses less on the decoding itself and more on the French invasion of Egypt that led to the discovery and the military and cultural battle with Britain that followed. British military historian Downs tells an engrossing story full of larger-than-life and sometimes simply wacky characters, led to Egypt by Napoleon. Among them were dozens of scholars, artists and scientists who produced an explosion of knowledge on both ancient Egyptian and later Islamic culture. The invasion itself ended in disaster when Admiral Nelson's armada destroyed the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Napoleon returned to France; his army, left to wither from heat, disease and deprivation, surrendered to Britain in 1801. Much of the book concerns clumsy French efforts to avoid turning over their artifacts, including the Rosetta stone, to the victors. Downs takes an original tack to this well-known story with a straightforward, dramatic account of the 1,500pound stone from its discovery until its arrival at the British Museum, where it rests today. DISCOVERY AT ROSETTA: THE STONE THAT UNLOCKED THE MYSTERIES OF ANCIENT EGYPT BY JONATHAN DOWNS PDF

The gripping tale of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, the artifact that opened up ancient Egypt and triggered a struggle for cultural supremacy. One fateful day in 1799, a unit of French army engineers made a discovery that opened the floodgates of history, rousing the gods of the Nile after two thousand years. In a crumbling castle on the banks of the Nile, the engineers found an unusual chunk of dark, chiseled debris. It was the Rosetta Stone, and it would change civilization forever. Discovery of Rosetta is the first book to tell the story of the Rosetta Stone—how it fell into British hands, the battle over who would be the first to successfully decipher it, and how it came to sit where it is today, in the British Museum. The Rosetta Stone is much more than a rock—it is the key to an ancient civilization and a modern symbol of human discovery, conquest, and scholarship. However, being someone who absolutely hated history in school, I didn't imagine being able to share his enthusiasm. And so, I must confess I felt more than a little reticent when he then handed me the book and virtually demanded that I at least give it a go. Resigning myself to my fate, I began to read: "Somewhere out to sea," the book began, "bearing down furiously upon the swelling coast of Egypt, came an invasion fleet sent by the greatest power in the East." And from there I was hooked. This was clearly no dry history lesson like the ones I was forced to read at school, this was written in the style of a fast-paced and gripping novel, each chapter ending with a "hook" to drag you on to the next. And, again like a novel, it had its heroes and villains, only in this case nothing was being made up; all the facts presented had been meticulously researched and dramatically depicted. In short, this had all the elements of a Bernard Cornwell novel but with one added advantage - it was all true. Without wishing to give too much away (and thereby depriving you of the chance to enjoy it for yourself), the book covers Bonaparte's invasion of Egypt in 1798 and how, amidst the smoke of the Napoleonic battles, came the serendipitous discovery of an ancient artifact that would later act as the key to unlocking the ancient language of the Egyptians. For it was in the small naval town of Rosetta that one of the greatest archeological finds since the discovery of Troy was uncovered, just a slab of basalt with strange writing on it, but writings that would ultimately lead to the opening of the floodgates of history, "reviving the gods of the Nile after two thousand years of their patient, megalithic meditation." A highly enjoyable read. Well recommended. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Terrific story hampered by poor Kindle font By B. Scott Andersen This is a terrific story told about one of the most significant discoveries of our time. My trouble with the work is the non-standard font used to produce the book on the Kindle. (If you're reading this review about a version not on the Kindle, kindly ignore the commentary on the electronic formatting.) The font selected is thin and does not render well on the eInk display. It is probably the

same font used for the printed edition, which probably looks great on paper, but it is frustratingly unreadable on the Kindle. The story of the French adventure in Egypt, the English driving them out, and of the science and discovery is terrific. If not for the horrendous typography I could wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody fascinated with hieroglyphics, Egyptology, or the state of science in the 19th century. It is a great story poorly presented. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book, excellent seller By Jennifer B.
