Great parent/kid book to read together By Courtnie Crutchfield My 11 yr old daughter loves this series and asked me to read it with her. I found myself reluctantly enjoying these books. I like the hidden morality lessons and the mythological component, which has inspired her to learn about the Greek gods independently. There is a romantic component between the characters which I could do without, but it's all PG and nothing too hot and heavy. Blanco The premise of the series is that Greek mythology and its beasts, gods, etc. are actually real. That fact makes for a fun adventure. Some twists will make you continue reading (won't go into much more detail: no spoilers). Good continuation to lightning thief. My 9 yo and I have read them together. Farrell I started this series because my son begged me to read the first book. Since I love reading, it didn't seem too hard to "slum" for a bit and read what I considered a children's book. Who knew that I would be tearing through the series, pushing aside a pile of books that I should have been reading, going so far as to sneak into my son's room to grab this book from his bed after he fell asleep so I could read it. This whole series is fantastic, and this book was just as compelling and page turning as the other three. Although we are a family of readers, it's hard to find a book that all of the readers (two are just learning to read) can really enjoy reading and discuss. The other really neat side is that the series has brought up the subject of Greek myths and we've been having lots of fun learning about them as a family and talking about them. A note, while this is a fantastic book and a fantastic series, there are some more serious subjects in the book that some families might not be totally comfortable with. This isn't much of an issue
with me, my son is young for the subject matter of the book (he's 7), but since we've both read it, we can discuss the different aspects he doesn't understand together, which I enjoy.
