It is quaint and a quick read. I read it year-round when I get a tugging of Christmas in my mind and heart. The sketches in the book add a nice touch and bring the story alive. This is the first book of Irving's that I have read and I quite enjoyed it. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lovely reprint of a Christmas classic By marigold I gave this book to a sibling who is an ardent fan of Christmas and all its trappings, lore, and good cheer. Come to find out he had been given an original edition of this book some years before which his daughter absconded with, so he was more than pleased to receive this reprint to replace it. In fact I had searched eBay for an original copy for him, but tatty old copies were going for a high price. So this reprint by Juniper Grove is a welcome gift to lovers of Christmas, literature, and Washington Irving. Of the several reprinted editions out there, this one is the most attractive and well-done. I recently read a book on the origins of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, where I learned that he and Irving were friends, each making trips across the Atlantic to visit the other's country. Which explains how an American writer of such American regional tales as "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle" came to write about Victorian/Dickensian Christmas customs in England. This is a delightful volume to peruse or read aloud by the fire at Christmastime. The illustrations are wonderful as well. I was very happy to discover this book! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is my favorite Christmas book hands down By Anna This is my favorite Christmas book hands down. Washington Irving is one our greatest American writers and he was so knowledgeable of European life and custom as well. This book brings the reader face to face with 19th Century English Country Christmas customs. It also brings the reader valuable information of what Christmas in more ancient times in England was like as well. The writing is visual, thoughtful and poetic. The illustrations by the incredible Caldecott are beyond delightful. They are so precious in a great way. They are incredibly detailed. The reader is in awe that anyone took such time to bring forth such little touches. In today's world it would have been a person with an Iphone alas. I love every aspect of this book. I purchased this particular edition as a gift for my niece, as there wasn't any other hardcover available. I wanted it to be a keepsake. I read the Chapman Billies edition every year. It is such a joy in a turbulent world. See all 4 customer reviews...
