Defining Marshal - The Epitome of "Honour" By Jan Landwehr I have been waiting a few years now for American historian, Catherine Armstrong, to finish her work on William Marshal and she doesn't disappoint. For those who don't know, William Marshal had five sons and five daughters but sadly all five sons died without issue - a few under mysterious circumstances - and for most European biographers - the daughters are little considered even today. And that's one of the strong suits of Catherine's great work - she has spent a great deal of time delineating the genealogy of William Marshal. That's important for us Americans. Indeed, I don't know how many Americans out there are descended from William Marshal - but as a female descendant - his 26th great-granddaugther thru his four eldest daughters, Maud, Sibyl, Isabel, Eva - it's important to note that William Marshal in many ways foreshadows our own American Bill of Rights and our own American Declaration of Independence. As the negotiator and co-author behind the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest, William Marshal leaves an important legacy to all his relatives across the pond - the very definition of "honour" and how honor is worth living and dying for eight centuries later. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ms. Armstrong's characterization of William seemed superficial, and I had a hard time separating him out as a person. Ms. Armstrong also seems a bit
too judgmental about John FitzGilbert, and says, per the 'chanson de geste' of William Marshal, 'there is nothing to be found of the later chivalrous knight to be found' in John. However, my reading of the Histoire regarding John indicates it looks at him very positively, giving him much praise, and refers to him as 'brave, trustworthy, wise, courtly, and a preudome (i.e. a respected man of standing).
