Politzer An excellent pastiche of the style and spirit of Shakespeare. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A for the Attempt, D for the Execution By A Pinyan It is a brave task to write a sequel to Macbeth, which is among Shakespeare's quickest and most accessible tragedies. I salute Lukeman for the making the attempt. I love MacB - but Seed of Banquo is lacking in scholarship and plausibility on many levels. Macbeth II rehashes all of the themes of Macbeth without adding to them in poetry, richness of characterization, or excitement. It's indicated that we should care about characters - Macbeth is virtuous; Malcolm is the rightful king; Macduff is, well, Macduff, blunt and noble but naive - but there's no wit in any of them, no depth and passion arrives out of nowhere. The 3 murderers make an appearance - somehow Malcolm knows who they are, but hasn't in the past 10 years sought them out for punishment. For some reason Malcolm rules out of Dunsinane, where his father was murdered and which is the ancestral home of the thane of Glamis, instead of from Scone or some other royal residence. For some reason, in the 10 years of his reign the king hasn't married to strengthen his position and beget heirs. For some reason the Macbeths sent their baby away when she was an infant (none of the suggested reasons really make sense). I'm not saying dramatic license can't be taken with history - no one who loves Shakespeare would make that claim. Malcolm was an actual king who married twice and had a great number of children, one of whom succeeded him. The plot of this play has no attachment at all to history. Most annoying to me, Lukeman doesn't appear to have done any research on the original Macbeth play. (He may have, but it doesn't appear that way.) If he had a dramaturg assist him at all, he would've known a few basic facts that would've enriched his play. Basic attitudes of the time about royalty and succession. Most egregiously, setting the whole play in motion, Lukeman, in his foreward, refers to Fleance's escape as an unresolved aspect of the witches' prophecy - but it's not. Elizabethan audiences knew - or would've learned from the succession of kings visible in Macbeth's later visit to the witches - that the current king was a supposed descendant of Banquo. Shakespeare didn't need to end the play with it - that's not how history progressed. There are more specifics - callbacks to Shakespearean lines that read more like plagiarism than homage, Malcolm's brief obsession with the blood on himself a la Lady Macbeth - that come across as heavy-handed.
I do applaud the effort - especially the effort towards iambic pentameter and fast-moving action but the briefest of research would've gone a long way. The people who will want to love this play are people who love and know Macbeth. I saw Dunsinane by David Grieg in Edinburgh last year - that was also a Macbeth sequel. If you are interested in Shakespearean sequels, I recommend that one. It does rewrite Macbeth a bit Lady M didn't really die - and it does not attempt all the iambic pentameter - but it's a worthy follow up, and also a good, solid play. Interesting Story; Lack of Language By Jackline Hunter-Chang Although a decade has passed in the story timeline since Macbeth's fall, the story begins on the eve of impending war, with potentially dangerous rebel armies building up in several locations, and King Malcolm seeking a bride to produce an heir. Court politics and the ambiguous prophecies of the witches succeed in convincing Malcolm to slay his brother Donalbain, believing him a threat to his throne. He begins his descent to madness, when he first sees Macbeth's daughter, believing her to be the apparition of her mother. Yet, her character is far different, the roles switched in this sequel; Macbeth, who grew up in a nunnery, dutifully consents to become his wife, Lady Malcolm, and though he is drawn to her, Malcolm himself becomes more obsessed with the witches' words and mercilessly finding traitors in his court, slaying the faithful MacDuff. Seyton's plot of enthroning his daughter Syna eventually has a confused and emotional Malcolm decree his Lady's death, and after which, he seems to lose his reason. Though the witch's prophecies have been true thus far, he vows to break their prophecy to spite them--by jumping head first into battle, to defy their decree that only Cawdor can kill him... Only to find that Cawdor (who through a spontaneous deux ex machina arises from an army of peasants to support Fleance) does kill him, and, of course, Fleance, the seed of Banquo, takes the throne. It's perhaps a new idea to read something Shakespearean, and to become nostalgic for proper iambic pentameter--complete with the obscure analogies of another time. But, unfortunately, that was my impression while reading this sequel. The pacing is decent, but perhaps more poetic lines are needed to "artistically justify" sudden changes in character thoughts--Lady Macbeth-Malcolm's change of heart from pious to gaining an affinity for MacDuff and Malcolm's sudden love for her, for example. While the piece is reasonably well edited, the language the story is woven in does not compare with its predecessor. Nevertheless, the story is interesting, the overall plot of the sequel plausible and suspenseful enough to be a page-turner. See all 9 customer reviews...
