While structured (and, unfortunately, priced) as a textbook, this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning about critical thinking. Not simply about "debunking," the authors explain important topics such as how we acquire knowledge, how science differs from pseudoscience, and how human psychology itself affects our ability to separate fact from fiction. The book includes in-depth examination of topics drawn from classic skeptics' subjects such as UFOs, psychics, and cryptozoology, as well as current alternative medicine and mental health pseudoscience. The authors also explain why critical thinking is important, and they make excellent recommendations for how to practice it. Whether you are new to the subject, or simply want to hone your critical thinking skills, this book would be a valuable addition to your critical thinking toolbox. I was very pleased with the text By Lindsey Osterman I made this the required textbook for my junior/senior-level class, "Pseudoscience In The Real World," last spring, in which students are required to identify, research, and design a solution to a current pseudoscientific problem (e.g., one group researched the purported vaccine-autism link and its implications for public health). I was very pleased with the text, as were my students. The first few chapters are a well-written and engaging introduction to key contributors to pseudoscientific thinking and tools to recognize and overcome them. The remaining chapters provide fascinating overviews of a variety of pseudoscientific areas of inquiry, of which my students made very good use to start their research into their chosen topics. Overall, the book was very clearly written, interesting, comprehensive, and accessible to students. I will definitely continue using it in future iterations of my course.
