From the Author So, what is my knowledge base for this topic ? Let me tell you the story. I was the founder of a company called The Binomial Group in 1972 (which eventually became Binomial International). Our main line was consulting studies, in what we now call IT. Over the next ten years, we added staff and were doing these consulting studies in many parts of the world. In the early '80s, the topic of disaster recovery planning was 'invented'. As we were mostly systems engineers and many of us were also volunteer firemen and EMT's (paramedics in those days), we took to this new topic. We concentrated on doing DRP studies, again in many countries. Over the years, DRP blossomed into BCP, COOP, BRP, and Emergency Planning. After about three years, we realized that we were doing the same work again and again. That's the basis for a computer program, so we began development on our system for business continuity plans, then called Phoenix and now called PlanBuilder. About 1996, we identified a need for education and training and began our series of seminars, both inhouse and public and at conferences such as the DRJ. Ten years after that, we added a plan maintenance function for our clients. In 2005, we added 'remote coaching' to our offerings. Along the way, we also recognized a need for vertical versions and so, added business continuity planning for small business, banks, credit unions, biotechnology companies, data centres, Internet service providers and hospitals. We also saw a worldwide need in 2009 for pandemic planning, which is really a special case of BCP and did that. We also saw a need for security planning and this has turned out to be the biggest one yet.

In 2013, we began to offer French- and Spanish-language versions of our systems. All of these are in the business continuity/disaster recovery arena and they all complement each other. With the ups and downs in world economies, these offerings don't have the same sales cycles and so add together very nicely. All of these items and years of experience has uniquely qualified me to help you too.

Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Planning are critically important to the survival of any organization. There are so many disastrous events that can happen in the world today. And, through no fault of your own, just one of these can cause the demise of your organization. These events can range from terrorism to weather to power failures to rogue employees to a chance accident. The event doesn’t even have to happen to your organization but could be simply related to yours. This includes things such as a gas leak in the same area, a disruption in the supply line for your raw materials or your outgoing shipments, a major weather systems that disrupts power a few states away or even a hostage taking in your city. These may be things beyond your control but they still can affect you in a serious way. Your organization could be a company, a government department, a school, a hospital, a hotel, an Internet service provider, a food or clothing store. It really doesn’t matter. Your goals are the same: to be still in business when the event is over. This means that you have to know what to do before the event so that your organization and your people are prepared, what to do during the event to maximize the safety of the people and minimize damage, and what to do after the event to recover as quickly and efficiently as possible. Remember that the main goal is to still be business because you knew enough to prepare in advance. To do that, you will have to convince senior management that this is a good thing to do. To do that, you will need to learn why this is true and be able to answer the questions that will surely come about why we need to do this now. Being prepared isn’t cheap but it is much more cost effective that starting over from nothing. Building gone, people gone, money gone, clients gone. This series of books is being written to explain what must be done in BCP. This first book will explain how you can present this topic to senior management in your organization. The purpose of this book is to tell you everything you need to know to present Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery Planning to your senior management and to prepare you to be able to prepare the material and gather the facts to answer their questions. If they don’t ask you questions, then you’re either too good or you haven’t yet tweaked their interest. And, like most exercises involving management at any level, you only get one chance. There will be two things that you will want to get agreement on from management. The first of these is to convince them that BCP/DRP is important to the organization and why. They will have all the normal objections about money and likelihood of occurrence for which we have provided you with answers. Most of your battle will be this job of convincing them to do it. The second task will be to get them to agree on the method of plan development that you recommend. This book

will certainly help you with both of these tasks. ● ● ● ●
