Good ideas at heart but lacking soul By Shawn Koester As a pastor to be and a liturgy geek, I was interested in checking out the UCC's take on a Book of Worship. The black cover seems to evoke the Evangelical (Lutheran) & Reformed (Presbyterian) strands of the UCC. I'm sure many of the people who worked on this projects have their hearts in the right place and many of them have a close relationship to the Lord but this book is not my cup of tea. First the praise: I give credit to the UCC for including Four orders of the Word & Sacrament and three orders of the Word, for including services for the major liturgical seasons including Tenebrae and the Easter Vigil and a service for foot washing. They even impressed me with an order for the dissolution of marriage and a marriage liturgy honoring marriages of both God's straight and LGBT children. However, much like its younger sibling, the New Century Hymnal, is plagued with many of the same problems- leans too much in the high church direction, inclusive language going way to far, lacking a certain oomph in the liturgy, the liturgies being stiff upped lipped and frothy. If you are seeking a better resource for a book of worship I recommend Chalice Worship from the Disciples, Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) of the ELCA Lutherans, the Presbyterian Church USA Book of Worship, the United Methodist Hymnal or the 1982 Hymnal from the Episcopal Church. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
