Most helpful customer reviews 60 of 64 people found the following review helpful. This particular edition is poor: typos in every sentence By Verna Estes It is not my intention in this review to remark at any length on Cather's literary ability. Instead, I merely advise to anyone who plans on purchasing this book to purchase a different copy. This

particular edition is poor in two ways. 1. The only information the book offers other than the text itself is the publisher and date (Cassia Press, 2009) and that it was printed on 23 December 2009 in Lexington, KY. It fails even to give the year it was originally printed. 2. More significantly, almost every single sentence in this edition has a typo where a space is omitted. The first two sentences of the prologue, for example, read: "One summer evening in the year 1848, three Cardinals and amissionary Bishop from America were dining together in the gardensof a villa in the Sabine hills, overlooking Rome. The villa wasfamous for the fine view from its terrace." It makes it difficult to read. Horribly unprofessional. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting look at early New Mexico and the southwest By Snowkey I found this book very interested from an historical perspective. It is a fascinating book about the early Southwest, in particular New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and Mexico. Although the names of the characters are made up, Cather did her research and most of the hard facts are correct about the characters and the area. Willa Cather is considered one of the great American writers. I would say it was very well written but not one of the greats, but, then again, I am not an expert. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Willa Cather on the arrival of the first Archbishop to New Mexico. By WD50 Ms. Cather had an intimate knowledge of the Southwest region and she used a diary left by the actual priest (Lamy) who is the title character, the Archbishop Latour. I doubt a more beautiful description of the American frontier of 1850 has been written. She can spin a story based on historical truth that is nearly impossible to set aside...her artistry rivals other authors of her era. See all 434 customer reviews...
