An Exciting, Original Story, Worthy of Your Time By amazon reviewer This is a compilation edition of the first season of Squanto Undead: Wake the Undead, series episodes 1-5. I have chosen to review/rate this book, episode by episode. Note: As this episode follows the events of the previous episode, I do not recommend reading this series out of order. Episode/Part One (5 stars) I was a bit apprehensive about reading a zombies story set in an alternative timeline of Americas frontier days. Yet, I took on the book in a buddy read with a couple of my fellow Zombie lovers, and I am glad that I did. :-)
After a few pages of set up, this story springs to life in some well-written combat scenes. I was glued to my seat as the plot progressed introducing several interesting characters (although most were short-lived), tantalizing clues and suspense-filled dangers. I encourage other zombie lovers to pick this up and give it a read. But be forewarned, there is a bit of gore in here. Episode/Part Two (4 Stars) This is the second episode of the Squanto Undead series. It starts up right after Squanto and his English friends have escaped the Narragansett tribe. Upon regrouping with a lost sailor they learn more about the zombies. The group of survivors realize that they must head to Squanto's tribe to find help battling both the zombies and the Narragansett people. This episode has a fair amount of combat action scenes that I found exciting to read. I enjoyed the steady pace of the plot. The characters have had a clear direction on their journey which gives this story a sense of adventure. Some of the scenes have a bit of gore and violence, so this story might not be the best fit for young or sensitive readers. Other than that, if you are looking for an exciting zombie read which is different than your typical zombie tale, I encourage you to pick this series up and give it a try. Episode/Part Three (4 stars) This episode switched the focus of the story off the immediate escape from and evasion of the Narragansett tribe onto the exploration of our main character Squanto as he reconnects with his Father and the remaining Patuxet tribe. Many times in this episode I found the character of Squanto annoying as he struggled to own his past mistakes and assume the role of a "man" rather than acting like the chief's spoiled eldest son. When I was considering how many stars to give this episode my first thought was to dock it a star because I was annoyed with the character. But then I thought about the quality of the story, which had not changed. This is still a highly entertaining and original story. Episode/Part Four (4 stars) The story continues as Squanto and the remaining Patuxet tribe prepare for battle with the Narragansett tribe. In this episode the opposing forces are clearly defined. The young chief Unbooko rallies his friends, while the Patuxet practice for the upcoming battle. The pace of the story in this episode is similar to the last episode. With much of the focus being placed on the relationships inside each of the tribes. You can tell that a large battle will take place in the last episode. However, I found the preparation for battle and power struggles with in the tribes tedious and slow. The zombies have disappeared from the storyline all together. We have one last episode/part to go. And I have high hopes for a return to the previous levels of zombie combat action. Overall I would say this is still an exciting, original story, worthy of your time. Episode/Part Five (3.5 Stars) In the final episode of Squanto Undead, we find some of the most exciting combat fighting scenes in this book, as the Patuxet tribe battles with the Narragansett and their allies. The episode rushed by me in less than 30 mins of reading. I felt that this season sort of runs out time, rather than resolves itself.
Other than the final battle between the tribes most of the plot lines where left unresolved. Will Ben, Thomas and the other Englishmen get back to England? Where are all the zombies seen and referenced to in the first parts of the book? Will Squanto mature and assume his role as the future chief of his tribe? Having been injured on the battle field will Thomas die and become a zombie? These and many or questions remain hanging for the next season. I recommending this series to lovers of alternate history, early American frontier days and zombie. *Readers should be advised that in its current edition, this book is in dire need of additional editing. 1/20/2014 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun historical fiction, with zombies! By Randall C. Harmelink Those looking for a lot of zombies and zombie gore might be disappointed. There's more intertribal warfare in this series than there is zombie warfare. But I enjoyed it anyway. The action scenes are well-written, and the zombies have a unique aspect to them. The pace slows down a bit in parts 3 and 4, but only to build up to part 5. But don't look for a lot of plot line resolutions by the end of part 5. There is more to come. Fun & worth reading By Nicole Orth I really enjoyed this action packed alternate take on Squanto. The books are very fast paced and I finished reading them in only a few hours. Couldn't put them down because I wanted to know what happened next. I will say if your expecting a lot of zombies you may be disappointed. They are kind of more in the background.
