Twist and Shout By S Riaz Like so many of Spencer Leigh’s books, this evolved from one of his radio shows – in this case, a series of programmes called, “Let’s Go Down the Cavern,” which led to a stage musical and then a book. That was in 1984 and the book was then revised to this edition in 2004. Also, like many of his books, it consists of snippets of interviews with many people about various events and places, associated with Merseybeat, the Beatles, Hamburg and the Cavern. Just about everybody associated with Merseybeat have been interviewed in this book. Subjects covered include clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg, Brian Epstein and NEMS, the sacking of Pete Best, early recordings, those who found success and those who success passed by. The contributors are a Who’s Who of Merseybest, from members of just about every band to Allan Williams, Bob Wooler, Pete Best, Ray McFall and probably anyone you can think of. This book is a joy to dip into – full of funny stories and memories, all seen from enough distance that they can be viewed without any bitterness or regret. It was an amazing time and those involved were, by the time the book was published, simply proud to have been involved. This is out of print now, but if you are a fan of the Beatles, then do try and get hold of a copy. It is a really joyous book and you are bound to read many stories you have not heard before.
