For lovers of Saintpaulia species and gorgeous botanical paintings By Tujunga Wash I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book, aside from beautiful, original illustrations. I was surprised to read that the author was born and raised in Tanzania, and played in the mountainous forests where African violets grew wild. Not only is she a talented artist, but she provides excellent descriptions of the native habitats for some of the Saintpaulia species that are now known only to botanists and a relatively few hobby growers around the world. In addition to the exquisite paintings, the book includes photographs of wild African violets in their natural environments, as well as several photographs documenting the author's early life in (and her return to) Tanzania (c. 1991-2006) to study and sketch Saintpaulia species. The author also provides historical background on the discovery of these plants, the changes that have occurred in their native ranges, and their cultivation in horticultural collections. For the record, this book does NOT offer information about growing African violets as houseplants (there are plenty of other sources for that kind of information), nor does the author discuss the thousands of hybrid African violets now grown all over the world. Nevertheless, as someone who grows African violets as a hobby, I found it refreshing to see the author's lovely paintings of the various species violets, and to read about (and see!) the plants she studied. Along with her beautiful paintings, Raistrick provides us with botanical sketches of the leaves, leaf hairs, and seed capsules of the different species, all used in positively identifying them. (As a bonus, she also includes some paintings of other plant species that occur in the same habitat as violets.) If you love African violets, and want an insider's view of the rather humble origins of the many varieties cultivated as houseplants today, you will love this book. After perusing it the first time, I felt I had a much deeper understanding of the origins of the plants I have grown for so many years. Because of the photographs, I could almost feel that I had accompanied the author as she sought and sketched the various species, and through the paintings I can feel her passion for these

I raise and show African violets - if you are a fan of these wonderful plants, and particularly if you have an interest in the species plants, this book might be one you want in your collection.
