Strid I really wanted to like this book, but ended up being grossly disappointed. The photos are for the most part rather dull (and many can be found elsewhere), the writing struck me as being rather amateur and the whole project came off flat. Much of the inside seemed to be filled colored geometric shapes (huh?) and empty space on the pages. I couldn't find any interesting stories/anecdotes about the musicians, only ridiculously topical biographies (a paragraph or two per artist). With a title like "Black Fire" and including words like revolution and radical, I thought this would be an important document of an exciting time in music, but it is just bland and easily forgettable. What a disappointing effort. If you are interested in this period/music, I would recommend George Lewis' book "A Power Stronger Than Itself" instead. Want really cool photos of jazz musicians (including some from the fringe)? Check out the "Jazz Image" by Lee Tanner. Whatever you do, I would recommend passing this one over.
