This is the third novel by Rene that I have read (but I have already bought them all). The Cancer story line, and the FACT that there are orphan drugs took me on a journey back in time 17 years, to when I lost my Dad to the same cancer that Cissy had. This book was about love, faith, integrity, family and unwavering friendships. If you have not yet read this book, please do. Thank you Rene for keeping your readers wanting for more!! 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An Unusual Cancer Storyline, well worth reading By D. Locicero The author pointed out to me that her book, Done Deal, was available on a particular day as a free download because I had another of her novels in my want-to-read list. I was excited to read it and launched in right away. The premise is intriguing, she writes great characters and interactions, and
the poignant subject (a 49-year-old woman diagnosed with cancer) is addressed in a heartwarming and sometimes heart-breaking way. All of those are true positives and I can see where families who have been touched by cancer will find this a welcome and meaningful read. That being said, I can't understand all of the five-star reviews from a logical perspective. First, the book is just full of typos, misspellings, use of wrong homonyms, etc. and there are times when it just doesn't flow smoothly. For example, the main character walks down the stairs, stopping on the last step, and then her friend helps her continue slowly down the rest of the stairs. Those sorts of inconsistencies made it difficult for me to stay focused on what otherwise is an excellent storyline. So I had to subtract one star for that. Additionally, nearly the entire book (starting at chapter 2) is told as a flashback that begins one year earlier but, when we would have arrived at the point in time where the book began, there is no connection made to the beginning of the story. At least one character who was introduced as the story began is never mentioned again. I had actually loved the way the book began and was really looking forward to seeing how the author would choose to emerge from the flashback. Instead, the book ends abruptly (and, no spoilers here, I won't say how). So I subtracted a second star. With a good editor, this has the potential to become a really great book. I was grateful for the opportunity to read this indie author's book and am looking forward to reading at least one other book she wrote: Bishop Street, which was published a few months sooner than Done Deal for kindle and a few months later in paperback. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Advocate By Jada Ryker In Done Deal, by Rene Schultz, for Cissy "[l]ife was good and she thrived on being an optimist. Her sons were healthy, she was rich in friends, loved her job, and enjoyed her home. What more could she ask for? Cissy always tried to be upbeat and positive, and today was a typical reflection. She always found the best of the worst situations, and had a hard time understanding angry and negative people. She could never comprehend why people focused on unconstructive energy; to her it was a complete waste of time." When Cissy gets the heart-stopping diagnosis of cancer, she approaches the problem with all of her intelligence, drive, and energy. She researches drugs and her options. When she discovers what the pharmacology companies don't want anyone to know, she decides to take action. Cissy is an incomparable heroine, and you'll be glad you read her story.
