As it follows the career of a writer of uncertain parentage and omnivorous erotic tastes, Answered Prayers careens from a louche bar in Tangiers to a banquette at La Cote Basque, from literary salons to high-priced whorehouses. Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Overpriced By Sara Holland This is not a complete novel. I knew that when I bought it, but I wanted to read it since Random House paid him a million dollars for it. Originally he received $25,000. When he missed his deadlines, they upped his advance to $750,000. When he missed the next deadline, he got even more. I suppose I shouldn't blame Random House too much for wanting to get something back on its investment. I should blame the less than noble motivation within my own heart that made me want to read it. I wanted to read the final chapter because it caused so much real misery in real life. Capote wrote a vicious thinly veiled account of Billy Woodward's death in which he accused the widow of murder. After reading this story, the widow killed herself. Dominique Dunne was inspired to write his bestselling novel from the account and that inspired a movie , all of which compounded the Woodward tragedy. Both the Woodward's sons killed themselves. Ironically Capote's version of Billy Woodward's death was probably totally wrong and the police version the more accurate. Ann Woodward said she thought she was shooting a burglar after shooting her husband. Later a burglar was caught who confessed to burgling the Woodward's' house as well as others. This chapter destroyed Capote's life as well because the woman he adored above all others and who was dying of cancer never spoke to him again because he wrote an equally vicious and utterly tasteless (if fascinating in a horrible way) account in this same chapter of an affair her husband had under her nose. Capote couldn't understand why the people he betrayed felt so wronged and shunned him. Bitterly unhappy, he turned more and more to drugs and booze. The last chapter is definitely a cautionary tale. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was very disapointed. It was vulgar and I ... By Diana I was very disapointed.
