By Van Nielson Ned Beach is arguably the best submarine writer in the history of submarine books. This book is great! When it comes to submarineing, Beach went there and did that. He served aboard dieselelectric subs during World War II, and went on to skipper what was then the world's largest nuclear submarine (the SSN Triton) around the world submerged on her maiden voyage. In the submarine world, he knew everyone who was anyone. He also served as naval aide to Dwight Eisenhower during his presidency. As a submariner, he bridged the gap between conventional diesel-electric subs, and nuclear submarines. Beach wrote quite a few books. I've read most of 'em, and enjoyed every one. The man could write, and he knew how to tell a great story. He wrote "Run Silent, Run Deep", made into a Hollywood movie with none other than Burt Lancaster no less. In the late 1950's a television show by the title of Silent Service was made (much of it is now on the net). It's a series of well-made reenactments of critical events in World War II submarine history. In several of the episodes, Ned Beach is played by none other than Russell Johnson, later the professor on Gilligan's Island. Since in real life, Johnson actually flew 44 missions as a gunnernavigator aboard a B-25 medium bomber during World War II, and was decorated for his work, it's appropriate that he got to play Ned Beach. I hope the two men met each other at some point during production of the series. I grew up reading Ned Beach submarine books. I wish I'd had the chance to meet him. He died in 2002. Beach Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy is named for Ned, and for his father, another well-noted U.S. naval officer and writer. Read this book if you have any interest at all in knowing the history of the submarine's activity, especially during World War II. This guy could write. Berg Captain Beach writes extensively of many of the submarines the United States used in the Pacific,
primarily off the coast of Japan. He tells of the captains, X-Os and crews of these valiant warriors, as well as plans of attack. These mighty demons really put the Japanese in a bad place, regardless of the fact that they refused to surrender. Much of their shipping was destroyed, including oil, supplies and warships. Captain Beach is very specific, in some cases, regarding the missions. The book is written so well it is exciting to read. Non-Illustrated version By Jim Still a great read, but the version I got is NOT illustrated. About 50 years ago I read a version that was a very large hard copy that included many submarine pictures and maps. I suspected that this was not that edition or format based on the price. Somewhere on this site a recall that there were 28 different versions. I didn't obtain the illustrated version that I recall from long ago, but the text is the same. See all 118 customer reviews...
