By nicthereader It's been over 6 months since I read "A Shot in the Dark," Jennifer Burrows' first book in The Dark
Series, and I'm glad I finally got to read this extraordinarily satisfying sequel. Once again, just like in "A Shot in the Dark," the author captivates your attention within the first few sentences. Within moments, you'll be immediately thrust into the fast-paced lives of Laney and Josh, as well as get to know, and possibly loathe, new characters. Just like the first book of the series, this novel is told from multiple view points. Unlike the first book, though, Laney does much less of the narrating which gives the reader an opportunity to get to know Josh on a more personal level. One interesting contrast between "A Shot in the Dark" (told mostly from Laney's perspective) and "Into the Light" (told mostly from Josh's perspective) is the much darker and more serious tone throughout the story. This almost sobering tone convinces the reader that Josh is a much more complex character than you likely originally thought while reading "A Shot in the Dark" where Josh was portrayed as almost inhumanly and nauseatingly "the perfect guy." The author provides more depth to Josh's character by introducing the reader to a distressing new character, Jillian, Josh's schizophrenic sister. By allowing the reader to see this challenging and sometimes scary part of Josh's life, suddenly he's no longer just the "handsome, perfect, successful surgeon who drives a porsche," but now an actual person who faces adversities in life and family drama. Certainly, Laney faces her own family drama in this sequel as well; you will get intimately acquainted, perhaps reluctantly so, with Laney's mother. She will likely make you grit your teeth on more than one occasion. This book is the perfect sequel to "A Shot in the Dark." The plot thickens, the characters are developed more fully, and you'll finish with a satisfying "Aaahhhh." I guarantee you won't be able to put the book down once you start reading. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Engrossing Romantic Suspense By Tamara B. Into the Light by Jennifer Burrows is the second book in the Dark Series. I highly recommend reading A Shot in the Dark before reading Into the Light so you will know what is going on at the beginning of the story. At fifteen, Laney was raped and abused by her boyfriend, Scott, and it has taken years for the emotional wounds to heal. While on duty one night in the emergency department of the hospital where Laney works as a nurse, she is shot multiple times by Scott. Heavily sedated and in ICU so that the gunshot wound to her heart and other gunshot wounds can heal, her overprotected parents want to take her home so that she can be close to them while she heals…….two thousand miles away. Josh Stone, a surgeon, is totally in love with Laney. When they are together, it feels as though the planets have aligned and everything is right in the world. Although he had functioned just fine before he met Laney, he cannot imagine life being the same without her. Josh does not want Laney to be taken away by her parents and he is going to do everything within his powers to prevent that from happening. Before the shooting incident, Laney had been receiving some threatening letters at her home. Everyone thought that once her ex-boyfriend, Scott, was behind bars for the shooting, the letters would stop. They were wrong.
The story line was intriguing and kept me engrossed the entire time. The characters are well developed and realistic. I was glad that even though this was a medical romantic suspense novel, the author did not overuse medical terms that an average person would not know; there was just the right balance in order to convey what was actually going on with Laney’s health situation. It would have helped if there had been a prologue with a recap from the previous book. This was my first book from this author and I was confused at first on what was going on at the beginning of the story. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though less than half way through I had a general idea on whom the stalker was, I truly enjoyed taking the journey along with the characters as they tried to unravel the mystery. *I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. thoroughly enjoyed!! By Jennifer L - Book Btches Blog YES!!! I finally was able to fall in love with Josh and Laney!! I will be honest and say that I could not connect with them in A Shot in the Dark, the plot was great but I didn’t get enough emotion to be able to connect. But, I am SOOOOO happy I continued on with this series. Into the Light is so much better!! “You need to help her. She needs you now more than ever.” We are left with tragedy at the end of A Shot in the Dark and I quickly picked up Into the Light so I could know how it works out. But!!! It is not an immediate relief. The author makes you wait. LOL!! She takes you through many emotions and SO MUCH drama. I was not expecting all the action that happened in this book. I just wanted my HEA for Josh and Laney! But it was all well worth it. And I actually figured out the mystery early on in the story and was happy to see that I was right. Maybe I will be a detective in my next life ;) HaHa!! “I know enough about her to know there’s nothing you can say that will make me stop loving her. She’s the woman I’m meant to be with.” In the first book, I felt like Josh was too aggressive and I didn’t get his immediate attraction. But in Into the Light, I felt it!! I understood what he was feeling and I could definitely connect this time. And Laney, I missed her a little in this story but loved how she reacted in the end. The girl has a heart of gold and is so sweet and understanding. A lot happens in this book, so be ready!! Feelings are hurt, mysteries are solved, and love happens. And I know I didn’t think very highly of A Shot in the Dark, but it is a must read for you to truly understand and enjoy Into the Light as much as I did :)? See all 18 customer reviews...
