By Ned jarrett The book was in great shape besides all the "price stickers" at the upper right hand corner. Great price and arrived quickly. Although this book is outdated, it is very truthful of what you, as a consumer take for granted from your local dealership service department. If you drive a car and depend on a technician to repair it, then I highly recommend you read this book. If you ever watch TV commercials for local colleges stating "qualified auto techs in high demand" there is a reason. We are paid on Flat Rate and are used and abused by both the customer and employer. We often are forced to work for free and with extended hours and cut in the little pay we get with what little expensive benefits we get as well. We aren't even paid 20% of the labor rate of

$100+/hour you have to pay. We are not hourly. We do not get overtime pay. We are not protected by any labor laws. All the qualified techs are being chased out of the trade because of the lack of pay, working conditions, extended uncompensated hours, manufacturer and employer abuse, lack of benefits and politics. Ever wonder why you sometimes have to make several trips to the dealer for the same problem? How would you like to spend 8+ hours on a problem and only be compensated for 1.5 hours of it while missing out on all the other money you could have made on other cars, all for the sake of the "customer"? So sometimes techs just "throw parts" at a car to move on to another car to be able to feed their families. Want better service? Lobby for technicians to be paid by the hour and compensated for overtime and having government licensing for their trade. And I'm talking $25+/hour, not $10... Your unscrupulous upsells and "hack work" will stop. Better for the mechanic, even better for the customer. Read. This. Book, 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's about time! By andy This book is accurate and on the money. Its about time someone says it outloud for the public to hear. This is a book that any school administrator or automotive repair employer should read. It also provides useful information for the average car owner. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Flat Rate- A failed promise By Customer My husband, a mechanic, has time and again been taken advantage of for being honest. He could make more money if he would simply throw in an unnecessary part, as most do, and come to a quick conclusion about a problem. Why? Because of "flat rate". He can chose to be paid flat rate$11/hour guaranteed/ 30 hours a week (when he is usually there 45) or choose hourly pay @ $9.25. At this rate, we will never help alleviate the problem of the dishonest mechanic and the honest ones will continue to leave when they are burnt out or sick of making less than they're worth. This man, Tom Fennell, nailed the issue and provided a roadmap to solving a nationwide/worldwide problem. See all 3 customer reviews...
