BETTY SMITH: LIFE OF THE AUTHOR OF A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN BY VALERIE RALEIGH YOW PDF

Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn captured the imagination of readers in 1943. Now, over sixty years since its publication, thousands of readers of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn still enter its world and identify with Francie Nolan, growing up in a tenement in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Betty Smith admitted that Francie was herself and that her mother, father, grandparents, aunts, and uncles were the inspiration for the book's characters. Here, in the first published biography of Betty Smith, their real-life stories are told. The heroes in Smith's novels, all working-class womenFrancie in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the office worker Margy in Tomorrow Will Be Better, the housewife Maggie in Maggie-Now, the aspiring writer Annie in Joy in the Morning-become selfdirected and confident. These novels present an insider's view of a blue collar world, of complex characters and psychological dynamics. Smith's vision in her fiction was an unusual combination of no-holds-barred realism and hope. Betty Smith: Life of the Author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, carefully researched and precisely documented, is written in a warm, conversational voice. This tale of three cities-Brooklyn, Ann Arbor, and Chapel Hill-is wise, funny, and at times sad, a life of a writer but also of a daughter, lover, mother, and grandmother. AUTHOR Valerie Raleigh Yow, a former history professor, is a psychologist and playwright who lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has authored several books, including The History of Hera: A Woman's Art Cooperative and Recording Oral History: A Guide for the Humanities and Social Sciences, chosen by the American Library Association for its list, "Outstanding Academic Titles of 2006." Her first biography, Bernice Kelly Harris: A Good Life Was Writing, was described as "a wonderful biography that involves her reader in Harris's life."-Florida Historical Quarterly. Growing up I read and reread, and loved Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I was Francie Nolan. Valerie Yow's biography is like being there all over again. Beautifully written, Francie and Betty live in every word. -Ruth Moose, poet and short story writer; Rules and Secrets and other books; professor, English Department, University of North Carolina. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

This biography provided with greater understanding of how, when, where she wrote her books. Now if someone would just publish a book on her other writings-plays, articles, etc. And if they would reissue "Tomorrow will be better". 13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A journeyman biography of Smith By Eyria A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books. I've probably read it at least 10 times, initially as a young girl and often as an adult. I loved the book but never knew much about Betty Smith, the author, until recently. So I was very excited to read this biography. Overall, I found this book a bit disappointing. It gives you all the basic facts about Smith's life. But it doesn't make her come alive as a person, nor does it provide much social context or psychological analysis. The author basically narrates Smith's life year by year, telling us where she was living, what she was writing, who she was married to/dating, what her children were doing, etc. It doesn't get much deeper than that. I didn't get any sense of what Betty Smith was actually like as a person, except in the numerous quotes from her. The flatness of tone and dry recapitulation of events reminded me of a grade school book report. Betty Smith led a most unusual life for her time. She grew up in poverty and never graduated high school, yet became a bestselling novelist. She married three times and divorced twice. She had a longterm boyfriend whom she all but lived with for 10 years off and on--quite unconventional for that time. And she married two men 10+ years younger than her--again, unusual. Yow provides little context or insight into all this. What did Betty think about the differences between her own lifestyle and other women's? Was she conflicted, proud, or neutral about the different path she'd taken? Yow doesn't address these issues. She also leaves some factual questions unanswered. She implies that Betty became pregnant and had an abortion in the late 1930s, but does not explicitly state this outright. Yow also tells us that Betty's third husband Bob, the love of her life, apparently spent large amounts of her money for mysterious, undisclosed purposes shortly before his death--essentially stealing from her. However, we don't find out what he did with the money or how Betty felt when she learned of it. Similarly, there is little treatment of Bob's alcoholism--how bad it was, what effect it had on him and Betty, whether he ever tried to get help, etc. Nor is there much discussion of Betty's momentous decision to leave her first husband George, a lawyer, and become a single mom with 2 kids to support in the middle of the Depression. This book is fine as a basic introduction to Betty Smith's life, and I would recommend it as such. But it left me wanting more. 33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Great book.....how "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" came to grow

By J. Harrow Having loved "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn", I picked up Ms. Yow's biography of Betty Smith with curiosity and a measure of trepidation. I expected an academic treatise but what I discovered, to my delight, was a rich, full-bodied, insightful account of Betty Smith's life. Ms. Yow is a skilled story teller and this talent combined with her keen research skills and her expertise as a psychologist, yields a book that is not only informative and perceptive but a great read, as well. You won't be able to put this one down. Anyone who has read and loved "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" will enjoy this biography. Ms. Yow helps the reader achieve a new understanding of the genesis of Francie Nolan and her family through her compelling analysis of Ms. Smith's own story. See all 15 customer reviews...
