And it did prevent me from buying the book for a long time. It was only after having a chance to read the book in real life that I went here and purchased it. As an owner of almost every reputable knife book on amazon, I have to say this book is among some of the better ones as far as instruction goes. It's almost like a less wordy version of Richard Ryan's book. Maybe somewhere in the range of Michael Janich's book. Though those books are better on tactics in application. This book Brazilian knife fightin' - is superior to those as far as fundamentals and illustrations go. It has some of the best illustrations I've seen in a knife book. Some might consider that to be filler material, but I don't think that's the case. What needs to be said is being said and illustrations for clarity is no drawback at all. Many times text simply does not do when explaining things, and I've been annoyed with books that failed to show exactly what they were attempting to explain. Now, I doubt there is such a thing as a Brazilian knife fighting system. As another reviewer said, this book makes for an excellent introduction text to Filipino knife fighting. I am the author of the "Expedient Homemade Firearms" books covering the building of improvised firearms.I also have an interest in knives and the art of knife fighting self defence techniques. I recently obtained a copy of Bloody Brazilian Knife Fighting, more than anything, because the eye catching cover caught my attention. Upon receiving this book i found it to be very well presented from cover to cover. The information inside those covers is both "straight to the point" and easily understandable, even by those who might have no prior knowledge of this facinating subject. The book is, to say the least, profusely illustrated throughout with countless photo's and illustrations covering every aspect of the knife fighters art, written by Brazillian experts in their field. The book covers everything you need to know about using one of mans oldest tools as an instrument of self defence against a violent, weapon carrying, assailant. Something the lawless streets of Brazil has far too many of. It is well worth the asking price and should be regarded as a "must have" book for any knife, or knife fighting, enthusiast. hi. reading all reviews AFTER getting the book, it is clear that there isn't any consense about the people who read it. The book isn't great, in fact, I felt like reading a cheap copy of Richard Ryan's book on knife dueling. Contrary on what some reviewers seem to believe, I don't think there's an agenda going on here. Some people liked the book, others hated it. I don't think it's fair to attack other master only for getting some satisfaction on what it seems a personal revenge. Specially because at least one of the authors was closely associated with the so called trickster, and it is widely known that it was the trickster the one who taught him what he knows of knife fighting, on a weekend seminar. Being one of those who was disapointed with the book, and having bought the book in hope it was different material from the one previuosly published in Brazil (the american edition is shorter), I think it is fair enough to share that Brazil is not a knife dueling country. When knives are used here we have an assault or a murder, not a fighting. The simple fact that I rate the book one star shouldn't bother those people who clearly liked the material. Everyone is free to post his (or her) personal opinions, at least because Amazon provides this space for doing so. People interested in collecting knife fighting books will almost surely get this book, for the sake of collecting. People who are interested in real knife work should maybe avoid buying this one, for the reasons I refered above.
