Red Dirt Heart-the Series By Sean Andrew McNamara I realized while reading this exceptional series of NR Walker stories “ Red Dirt Heart “ that, after years of enjoying various genre and story avenues I made a conscious commitment to follow and finish an entire arc of stories. Now don’t get me wrong, you can read a bit, put it down and pick it up later type of story at any time. But Author Walker introduced me to a group of characters that I freely walked around with in a geographical area I had never imagined visiting and made me invest so wonderful quality time getting to know them. Travis and Charlie unfolded in front of my eyes. Each a character within themselves with personal orbits slowly building up traction while they gather various and sundry supporting characters to themselves. They grow with and because of each other, and once the direction is set in place they invest in making sure the roots are strong and the reality stronger. But it is the land, the red, red ground that ties all that they are and want to be towards the direction of their futures. The descriptions of the places and the people who are part of them tacks on a
burden of responsibility that most authors can’t sustain, NR Walker hits it right the first time and you spend hours reinvesting your reading commitment through each one of the 4 books and various side stories. As I said earlier, this is a serious reading event. Oh yes, you can pick it up and put it down, but you carry the story with you everywhere till you have the moment to reconnect. You want to find out why things happen to each character, what is going on with the family, the farm, the area, the animals- you want to know- and NR Walker doesn’t-EVER-disappoint! Each of us finds a joy in our own reading habits and expectations. We know what we like and invest time and money filling that need. Unexpected Love By Angela When I was little I was addicted to a cheesy sitcom set in an all girls' school called The Facts of Life. One season had the girls visiting Australia. "The Facts of Life Down Under" I think they called it. Because of that show I spent years believing the myth that in the Southern Hemisphere, water in a toilet swirls in the opposite direction as water in the Northern Hemisphere (I was like, seven, so cut me some slack). But it was also the first time I decided I absolutely had to visit Australia. Now, more years than I care to admit later, after finishing the Red Dirt Heart series, I think I need to revise my desire to add "Trip to Australia" to my bucket list, or at least a trip to that particular landscape. I don't think The Facts of Life Down Under covered all the deadly little critters American agronomy student Travis Craig encountered in the series. I can't even handle my native Wisconsin mosquitos, so I think a land filled with even scarier, deadlier critters just might do me in. Of course, if I had someone like Charlie Sutton at my side like Travis did, I could maybe make an exception. The romance was sexy and sweet and hot. But I think what impressed me the most were the details of life on the station. I know absolutely nothing about this topic, so I could be wrong, but the amount of detail was wonderful; not too much, just enough to keep my interest and with just enough technical jargon to seem realistic. Again, the writer could have been making it all up and I'd never know. What I also liked was how Charlie came out. I get a little twitchy when I read coming out horror stories so I avoid those and tend to stick to the lower angst stories. I'm not saying there were no challenges for Charlie, because that would be completely untrue, but I loved how once Charlie started moving forward he kept going. I highly recommend all four books in this series, Red Dirt Heart 2, Red Dirt Heart 3, and Red Dirt Heart 4. Not very original names for sequels, but the stories are so good the titles don't matter. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just realized I bought this book almost a year ago. Why'd it take me so long to finally read it?! By Mrs Readsalot Really enjoyed the premise of the book as well as the characters. Charlie is the sweetest guy and hardworking. Feels doomed to a life of solitude and the lack of love. Travis is almost like a sweet rain shower to Charlie's desert. He's refreshing and delightful and...Travis just feels 'right.' Sweetest moment of the book? Charlie and Travis visiting Charlie's dad. Very moving.
