Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Jolts and shocks and bumps and blood! By Keren Stepp WOW! A surprising twist on a zombie tale. Very graphic, chock full of unexpected descriptions, unpredictable similes and piquant humor. I read the book in one setting, it was that hard to put down. The mind that conceived this tale has had some significant emotional events! It seems Jay Smith was able to wring out of life's challenges, insights that produced The Diary of Jill Woodbine.
This is the first book I've read that I do not particularly like the main character, yet I had to know more. The ending was spectacular, provocative and heart thumping - Jay Smith takes your denial of what an ending ought to be and reverses your perspective completely! I hope future readers appreciate the obvious blood, sweat and tears that went into this work of art! I look forward to more books from this author! Jay Smith, I'd love to read some non-fiction written by you, your perspectives are very different! 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An emotional slug-fest By William R. Herr Fair Disclosure: I know Jay Smith, personally. We have a bit of a friendly rivalry which stretches back a quarter century. That said, I would love to give this a mediocre review. I cannot do so. Jay Smith rocked my socks, and I hate him for it. I bought this book last night, and began reading it on the Kindle platform, with the intention of setting it down after an hour or so, for sleep. Sleep was not an option, unfortunately, as the book demanded that I continue through the story. At the end, I closed out my device with the same level of awe that I feel as I walk out of a particularly good movie. The mind reels, and tries to absorb what it has seen. One struggles to encompass it in their own experience, in terms that they can comprehend. Jill Woodbine, a homosexual college student, moves from a relative life of college ease to the status of refugee in the space of one day. Through her adventures, she finds herself in a huge FEMA-like camp, meets the love of her life, and begins to uncover the sinister secrets upon which the camp is built. I would like to break this story into its parts, to analyze and proselytize on the benefits and drawbacks of narrative voice, of first-person storytelling, or of zombies as a plot mechanic. Such treatment in a review would detract, rather than add to the overall experience. Jay has written a book which takes the reader through an emotional slug-fest, and leaves them ready for more. Jill's observations are opinionated, often crude, and brutally honest; yet her diary is, in its own way, a breath of innocence. Even the odd idiosyncrasies in spelling and grammar seem to lend a greater believability to the prose. I know that they are artifacts which carried from the translation of the audio drama (on which the book is based), and yet they seem to be a part of Jill's own writing style. She is, after all, writing into a diary. Not even she believes that anyone will survive to read it. Should you? Oh heck yes. Buy this book. It is worth the price, and worth the read. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One perspective that works By John S. Drew If you've been following the HG World podcast, you'll know that a lot happens in the hour or so per episode. It can be a lot to take in. Now from series creator, writer, and producer Jay Smith comes The Diary of Jill Woodbine. Originally released as an audio reading, this work gives the reader the themes and ideas of HG World from the perspective of one, young person. The writing is sharp.
The ideas of thought provoking and I found it hard to wait in between releases of chapters of the original audio release. You'll find it hard to put down your Kindle once you start reading this. See all 12 customer reviews...
