THE CITY OF HEAVENLY TRANQUILLITY: BEIJING IN THE HISTORY OF CHINA BY JASPER BECKER PDF

The great city of Beijing, capital of China from the ninth century, was for a millennium one of the most extraordinary places on earth. At a time when London, Paris, or Rome had only several hundred thousand residents, Beijing held over a million. This book tells the history of this great city, and through it provides a highly engaging summary history of China. In the summer of 1997, President Jiang Zemin made a decision to destroy Beijing. There was no announcement, no explanation given, nor any attempt made to justify his decision. Even those working as architects only became aware of what was happening when it was already too late. Expertly moving between historical analysis and reportage, Jasper Becker describes the impact of this systematic destruction, a unique telling of the city's history that encapsulates both the grandeur of its creation and the tragedy of its demise. ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

I have been looking for a long time for a book like this. I am a passionate book reader and I always want to know more about history and culture of different cities of the world. I had read some previous books of Mr. Jasper. Each and every book of his reflects his journalistic writing skills. This book “City of Heavenly Tranquility: Beijing in the History of China “is another well written book,

based on the history and culture of Beijing. The book is very well illustrated by some well framed and excellent portraits, mini characters and vignettes. Most of the facts related to history of Beijing are illustrated by these vignettes in this book. You will come to know how different places such as temples, shrines, palaces, gardens are changed over the years. And how the five dynasties and turbulent events of the 20th century are underlying in the narrow streets of the city is very well described Mr. Jasper. Offices, shopping malls and housing complexes change the view of the city and as well as the of its inhabitants. Mr. Jasper describes why and how Chinese buried their history and extinguish the culture of one of its oldest city within a span of time. The Author also explains how Mao's former Red Guards, remain preserved to modernize china and its cities by destroying past and make new spaces for future development and growth. This book is also reviewed by “The New York Times”. This shows the level of professionalism of Mr. Jasper Becker. I highly recommend this book to every readers who are history lovers and are always in the search of some facts related to past in an entertaining way.
