By Marvelous Mal One of the wisest statements ever made is, "Politics and Religion both have their superstitions." Thomas Jefferson. Sagan understood the meaning of this quote more than most of us. Sagan's wisdom is needed now more than ever. Sagan, like the eminent scientist Richard Feynman, warned of scientists who conceive of politicalideological ideas, then concoct "experiments" to support their pre-conceived notions, ignoring, minimizing, or trying to explain away contradictory evidence or more plausible explanations. I have coined the term, "semi-science" to describe this antiintellectual approach. Never in history has so much semi-science been accepted by the public and even scientists. Semi-scientists have attempted to co-opt science to support their socio-political ideas and blatantly subjective valuejudgments. In so doing, these semi-scientists attempt to reify their emotions into a supposed "system." There are still those who refuse to accept Evolution; the Safety of Genetically Modified Foods, Vaccines, and other proven science. Denial of Climate change is also widespread. But just as bad as Climate Change "deniars" are those who promote unworkable, blatantly socio-political solutions to the problem under the guise of science. Coincidentally, many of these "solutions" are identical to those proposed by 60s environmental radicals before there was "science" to support their views. Interestingly, under their programs, the worst polluters are allowed to continuing polluting and improving their economies, while the U.S. further damages its economy. These semi-scientific ideologues fail to take into account the destruction of businesses and economies, and the millions of citizens who would lose jobs and be without proper food, shelter and transportation if their extreme "carbon" programs were put in place. Real science is reasonable, moderate and workable. The problem took many years to develop. The solution should be well-thought out and workable over time.

Similarly, without a shred of credible evidence, Rosie O'Donnell and other celebrities claim the 911 terror attacks were a "inside job," perpetrated by the U.S. Many "scientists" and journalists believe the Apollo Moon landing was a fake. Al Sharpton, a media celebrity, teaches that Egyptians were "Black" men who flew aircraft thousands of years ago. Sharpton's followers believe this nonsense, and Sharpton has been invited to the White House as an "adviser" to the president. Spurious political campaigns are even dressed up in the trappings of science. Small bits of science are mixed with blatant politics and emotionalism, and the entire concoction pushed off on the public as "science. Sagan, like Feynman, also warned of growing pseudo-science and "Cargo Cult" religious-like belief systems. Like the Cargo Cult islanders, modern politicians and ideologues attempt to recreate the superficial appearances of successful systems (fake college degrees, irrelevant programs, important sounding titles, etc.) and believe actual success must follow. Amazingly, they are "surprised" when success does not follow. These politicians and ideologues refuse to explain why and how the laws and programs they seek to enact will lead to achieving specific objectives. What is the correlation between the laws they propose and the outcomes they seek? Usually, there is none. And these same antiintellectuals refuse to apply the scientific method when their ideas and programs fail time-after-time. Nor will these politicians even admit the laws of science and our animal nature affect human activity and behavior. Rather, with supreme hubris, they arrogantly treat all citizens and the world itself as fungible and malleable. Pseudoscience and polarized emotionalism rule mainstream political and religious debates. Political superstitions prevail, perhaps, vestiges of religious feelings deep in man's nature. Antiintellectual emotionalism has spread to all disciplines. J.K. Galbraith, a supposed economist, claimed, "we no longer ought to fear making value-judgments rather than cost-judgments." In other words, we should do what subjectively feels good, regardless of the costs or practicalities. Galbraith does not tell us how society will pay for these whimsical "value-judgments." Nor do those of Galbraith's ilk seem to understand that society became affluent precisely because it deferred gratification and made sensible "cost-judgments." Similarly, many Leftist "philosophers" have rejected reason, altogether, referring to emphasis on logic as a "fetish" or "tool of the Patriarchy." Ideologues in politics and academia also reject the idea of "Merit." They propose highly subjective and flexible concepts of academic achievement in order to allow the unintelligent and lazy the same opportunities to enjoy academic "success" as hard working, gifted students. Professor Richard Sanders conducted detailed research of "affirmative action" programs, law school admissions, and bar test results. His research showed, unambiguously, that unqualified students were allowed to attend prestigious law schools, but flunked-out and failed bar exams in numbers far larger than other groups. In some cases, "honor graduates" from prestigious law schools failed bar exams multiple times. Obviously, the course of study and juris doctor degree, itself, have been "dumbed-down" for socio-political reasons. When certain political groups saw where the objective evidence and research were leading, they mounted a vicious campaign to stop Sander's important work. Interestingly, this dumbing-down phenomenon corresponded with a major push in law schools and law practice to stop using technical terms-of-art (Latin) and "complicated" sentences in legal writing. In truth, this push to dumb-down legal language was an effort to allow less intelligent people to practice law and become judges. In defense of the appointment of mediocre judges, a

politician once even argued that, "there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they?" This argument is similar to that made for allowing mediocre people to attend prestigious universities, study science, medicine, engineering, law, etc., and even teach as tenured professors. The same specious argument is also made in support of appointing and electing people based on membership in some group, rather than on merit. Pseudo-spirituality and superstition are more popular now than ever. Millions still consult horoscopes and astrology, as did Nancy Reagan. Hillary Clinton claimed to have "channeled" Eleanor Roosevelt. Democrat Christine O'Donnell, and many others, claim to have practiced Wicca/Witchcraft. A recent cover of National Geographic magazine lamented, "The War on Science." Rather than focus on spending money on science-related programs, politicians waste money on great-sounding social programs that please special interests groups and keep politicians in office. There are ongoing debates on the causes of the anti-science atmosphere in the U.S. But no one can doubt the rise of emotionalism and irrationality in the media, politics and academia. Irrational ideology has become the religion of our time. Is it that the U.S. does not support science, or is it that U.S. students no longer possess sufficient intelligence to engage in scientific work? Nurture or Nature? Are the ideas of the eminent scientist, James Watson correct? Is intelligence to be found in our genes? Has the U.S. gene pool been degraded? U.S. semi-scientists and ideologues will not even entertain the idea of research or a serious debate on this topic. Hardly the "democracy of science" envisioned by Sagan. Sagan shows that, while scientists often have great ideas, they do not always have good judgment in the real world. In their zeal to improve the lot of humanity, scientists have created some of the most dangerous and harmful products ever: nuclear bombs (some would also add nuclear power), napalm, agent orange, toxic chemicals that pollute our air and water, systems of producing food that have caused the population to boom beyond our capacity to take care of citizens, the country, and the planet. This lack of judgment explains why scientists do not make good political or military leaders. Of course, neither do lawyers or assorted hucksters. Science is, indeed, the most precious thing we have. And the light of science is growing dimmer. While the Universe is mysterious, there is no mystery to science. Science is nothing but meticulous observation and applied reason.
