Launay This is not only a great introduction into a fascinating lost gospel - that of Judas the betrayer - but
an outstanding summary of how textual bible scholarship in the field of New Testament analysis actually works...For example, the author reviews every single account of Judas in the Bible as well as extra-bibllical materials, discusses how these gospels were created according to current knowledge, and explores the similarities and differences in these accounts. He covers the exciting discovery of the Lost Gospel and provides a short introduction into its authentication. As for the Gospel itself, I agree with the author that this Coptic document is not written (actually) by Judas, but is an attempt to explain Judas role in the sacrifice of Jesus. At all times, Jesus is understood as a divine being in human clothes...so the sacrifice is seen as the way for Jesus to return to his divine world. (There is no bodily resurrection of the Christ!) Unlike Judeo-Christian scripture (but like Gnostic scrolls), the Gospel of Judas describes the world as corrupt and under the dominion of an inferior deity. Unlike Christian scripture, Judas is the most intimate and favored of the disciples of Jesus. All in all, Bart Erhrman does an outstanding job in explaining the place of the gospel in theological history. I might add that the narrator(s) of the audiobook were equally interesting and skilled. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gnostic ideas explained By Indiana Ehrman does an excellent job not only with the odd history of this gospel but moreso explaining the Gnostic ideas generally. Very helpful in making sense of their thinking. However, do wish I had a better grasp of what I suspect to be connections with Stoic and Pathagorean religious thought, something that I need to search better. Ehrman, an esteemed biblical scholar, discusses the fascinating saga of the recently discovered "Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot", and uses it as a backdrop from which to discuss many aspects of the Bible in a purely historic context. The interwoven Biblical and early-non-mainstream-Christianity plotlines that it touches-on are fascinating. If you have already read/listened-to Ehrman's New Testament course (Great Courses), or his Truth and Fiction in the De Vinci Code, this book is only slightly redundant, and well worth the read/listen.
