From the Back Cover They were compared to Mutt and Jeff, Hatfield and McCoy, and even Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton: two stubborn and driven men whose on-again off-again partnership entertained the nation for two decades. When Yankees owner George Steinbrenner hired former player Billy Martin to manage the famous baseball franchise, they immediately won two American League pennants and the 1977 World Series. But Billy was a scrappy, defiant son to Steinbrenner’s role as fickle father. Feuds erupted and separations ensued when each accused the other of disrespect, and the dysfunctional house that Ruth built was frequently broken up when the two would part ways, only to reunite within weeks. Through a total of five partnerships and five firings, Steinbrenner and Martin created great baseball drama and had some championship seasons along the way. By Amazon Customer As a lifelong Yankees' fan, having seen my first Yankees game at Shea Stadium (while the old Stadium was being renovated) during the first year of George Steinbrenner's ownership, this book brings back classic memories (Good, Bad, and Ugly). Quotes from all my boyhood idols are here including the late great Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles, Lou Pinella, Sparky Lyle (who loved to sit naked in Birthday cakes), Goose Gossage, and of course Reggie Jackson. Nettles especially, with his great wit and one-liners made me laugh at loud. Billy was a great manager, and was usually misunderstood. Billy's son sheds new light on his Dad (a devout Christian, but as #1 Billy puts it, "I'm not a perfect human being."). Additionally, we see the many sides of George, and all the Yankee Brass. As a New Yorker growing up in the Hudson Valley, I was a big fan of Phil Pepe as well, who authored the book. It's a good, fun, and quick read. If you're a Yankees fan and vaguely remember the 70's on, pick up this book. You will not be disappointed. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good book if you don't know the details or want a quick re-hash By clemente_in_right This is a solid retelling of the oft intersecting lives of Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner. There isn't much new here, but if their tale is unknown to you, this is a great place to start. Phil Pepe was a beat writer who covered the Yankees for a very long time. So, he had a front row seat for much of the action and he also draws on some of the other books written by or about the personnel involved, including Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles and Sparky Lyle. The book falters in two areas. First, there isn't much new here. So, if you are intimately familiar with this era of the Yankees, and specifically with Billy Martin's five managerial stints in the Bronx, there likely won't be anything that you haven't read or heard before.

Second, there are far too many mistakes in a book of this nature - from a major writer in modern times when fact checking is both quick and easy. A couple of examples: 1. Pepe describes (p. 8) Steinbrenner giving a speech to the Yankees 'during his first spring training' and relates how Lou Piniella asked a smart aleck question to Steinbrenner. Problem is, Steinbrenner bought the Yanks in January 1973 and Piniella didn't join the Bombers until after the 1973 season. I have no doubt the incident described happened. Just not in the Boss' first year as owner 2. In discussing Martin's career as Twins manager, Pepe relates a quote in which pitcher Jim Kaat (p. 30) relates pitching in relief for the Twins in an extra inning game against the Pilots. Kaat notes that he had pitched a complete game two days before. The Twins/Pilots contest was played on 7/19/69. A quick check of the facts reveals that Kaat started two days earlier, but went 5-2/3 innings. His start before that - 7/12/69 - was a complete game. 3. When describing the free agent signing of Goose Gossage prior to the 1978 season, Pepe notes that Gossage threw hard and also wore a Fu Manchu mustache. While facial hair was certainly a trademark of Gossage later in his career, at that point in time Gossage had yet to start wearing any facial hair - a quick internet search of pictures of Gossage from that time frame shows him as clean shaven and the full Fu Manchu style wasn't worn by him until 1981. 4. In describing the effect that Gossage's signing had on Sparky Lyle (also on p. 126), Pepe incorrectly states that Lyle, in 1977, became the 'first relief pitcher to ever win the Cy Young Award.' That distinction belongs to Mike Marshall who won the Cy Young award in 1974. 5. In dealing with Piniella's ascension to the spot of Yankees manager, Pepe states that Piniella had been a Yankee player on 'three championship teams.' I'm not sure how he is defining a championship in this case, but no matter how he defines it, the number three is incorrect. Piniella played on two World Series winning teams (1977 and 1978) and he played on four teams that won the American League pennant (1976, 1977, 1978 and 1981). See all 8 customer reviews...
