This is a solid College Algebra book, and I enjoy teaching from it. There are a few peculiarities that I don't particularly like (e.g. the change in the linear model between the first and second chapters), but overall it's a really good text. The examples draw from real-world experiences, and there are ample opportunities, particularly in the Explorations that appear at the end of each chapter, for students to write about mathematics - a skill that often is neglected in traditional textbooks. The Contexts problems at the end of the sections are also particularly challenging, and can be used to test competency with the material. There are numerous typos in the book, which is a bit distracting. The book also is not appropriate for students with weak skills in basic algebra. Students should be relatively adept at basic algebra in order to be successful with this book. However, armed with a basic knowledge of algebra, students will be able to handle the content covered in this text. Upon completion of their studies, students should have a solid grasp not only of the symbolic manipulations presented but also of some common uses of those constructs. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
