Statistically Inaccurate but Still Enjoyable By Dave For the most part I enjoyed this book but when I double checked what I thought were typographical errors I found they were actually statistical mistakes. An easy and obvious one was Denny McLain's won loss record in 1968. It was 31 - 6, not the 31 - 5 as stated on page 92. A minor mistake but annoying none the less. What I also thought was just a misprint in the article "Lord of the Triple". Cantor implies the all-time Tigers record for triples is the 309 hit by Sam Crawford. (A photo caption claims Crawford hit 312 for the Tigers.) Author George cantor goes so far as to claim that as a Tigers record, Crawford's statistic is permanently secure. That may be true as an MLB record but is flat out wrong concerning the Tigers. Crawford's 309 triples is in fact the MLB record but he hit 60 while he was with Cincinnati and only hit 249 as a Tiger. Ty Cobb holds the Tigers
record for triples with 284. As a former journalist and currently a teacher of sports journalism, I would have thought Cantor would have done a better job checking his facts. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Okay, but there are better books out there By DTroppens My opening title says it all. If you are a true Tiger fan and know a bit about the history of the team, you'll probably not see anything in this book you don't already know. Maybe someone just wanting a touch of Tiger history would find it more entertaining. If there wasn't so much other stuff out there, this wouldn't be a bad book. It kind of pales in comparison. The one plus is how it's laid out. You can pick up the book, turn to a page and read a quick story - kind of like a Bathroom Reader. If I could've given it 2 1/2 stars (average), I would've. But I had to give it 2 or 3, so I figured 2 was being a bit more honest. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. From Goose to Goose By Tim Williams A clever, fluid, literate look back at good, bad and weird moments in Tiger history. My favorite part is the juxtaposition of the 1935 single, the 1945 double, the 1968 triple and the 1984 homer, which takes us from Goose to Goose.
